i am looking for some sound advise from you all regarding organising my tree.
I use FTM linked with ancestry and also GR for some records, however, , had just found out that unless I renew with Ancestry my data will be lost.
Do I save the record on my hard drive and them upload that to FTM. Is is also useful to print them out and have a paper trail.

I must admit that is fills me with trepidation and not sure how to begin.

Looking forward to receiving your invaluable advise.

Thanks
. :-|

Hi Ollie

Do you have the records saved on your family Tree Maker program? If you do, they will be safe on there.

If you have your tree on Ancestry, you won't lose the tree but depending on how they are saved you may not have access to the census records etc that you have saved until you renew again.

Hi Red Squirrel

I input the information on FTM and then it tells me I have matching records and if they are correct I just merge the records from ancestry onto FTM and if I go to view them it takes me direct to Ancestry so not sure if they are saved. Sorry if I sound thick but only been doing this for 4 months and it is all a lot to take in.

Information some mounts up and I don't want to get inundated with them and find I am doing it all wrong.

thanks :-( :-( :-( :-(

You don't sound thick at all Ollie!

I may have a different version of Family Tree maker to you as I have a Mac. It would be best to check with someone who has the same version as you i.e. if you have a pc.

However, if I was to guess I would say that the records should be saved to your Family Tree Maker records. However, it doesn't sound right that you can't access the records without going to Ancestry, however, that may be to do with the pc version.

What FTM version do you have Ollie?

OllietheOwl

OllietheOwl Report 6 Feb 2012 23:24

Have the 2012 version and yes do have a pc. I synchronise my tree at the end of every session so that they are the same on ancestry as well as the FTM

I have just gone off line and went into FTM to view a census, however it wouldn't open it, therefore do not think it saves the record. Gone back on line and viewed again and it took me direct to ancestry.

If anyone who has the same set up as me would appreciate any help.

Don't know why it has seem to post everything twice on here
sorry !! :-(

Sounds like you've got the latest pc version with tree sync.

hmmm, maybe I shouldn't get the new mac version when it comes out, I don't like the sound of that.

Sorry I can't help you with this one,

Perhaps you need to change the title of this thread to something like:

FTM 2012 Query - saving records offline?

(You may come up with something snappier)

Good luck

Sorry to be a pest but how do I change the title of the thread.
thanks

You are NOT a pest lol

You should have EDIT at the top of your thread, click on that and then you should be able to change the title. You then need to save it by clicking on submit.

Hope that works :-D

From the way you're describing it, it sounds as if your FTM programme has recorded the details on your computer tree, but the images are retained on the Ancestry site.

If you want to keep the images, unfortunately it sounds as if you will have to down load them to your PC and attach to the relevant event/source references. Rather you than me!

IGP, amongst other's, is an experienced FTM user..if he spots this thread, he may be able to give more detailed advice.

Thanks Ollie. :) Hope you have a good night. You're obviously off out being a night owl lol

DET's observation seems pretty accurate, as DET suggested Inspector Green Pen (IGP) offers a lot of advice re FTM.

Failing that there are several forums that deal with FTM issues, however, hopefully it won't come to that:

I have changed the title in the hope that any user of FTM 2012 will be able to help.
Thanks :-D

Hi Ollie,
I have FTM2012 linked with my Ancestry trees. I've looked in my Documents folder where there is a Family Tree Maker folder That contains folders with names like Smith Tree Media. Those folders seem to contain the census and other images. So if you have those folders your data should be safe.

Followed your advise and found the folder and guess what = there they were. Am extremely grateful for all the advise given.
Saved me a lot of work.

many thanks to you all <3

Oh I'm pleased you've sorted it Ollie :)

However, after your offline test last night, is there no way to view those records on your tree whilst offline?

OllietheOwl

OllietheOwl Report 7 Feb 2012 20:20

Have just checked this and gone off line and have been able to view them in the my documents folder in family tree. The only downside is that they do not say who i have attached them to.
eg There are 8 separate 1871 census and they show 1871 census.jpg but have to open them all separately to find out who they refer too.
TWIT TWOO!!!!!!!!!!!

That's my point, on my Mac version - when I go offline, I can still access the records & they are connected to the tree.

Why isn't yours like this?

OllietheOwl

OllietheOwl Report 7 Feb 2012 20:36

You know that saying "Wise as an Owl" well I am obviously not a member of this species.

Have just gone off line and went into a record. and pressed view online copy. Obviously it wouldn't let me. so I went into the media tap (at the top) and there it was !!!!!!

Sorry about this
