Hi all, i was just wondering do people tend to copy each others trees without definatly knowing who it is, for example i have just got a birth cert for my 5x gt grandfather William Havelock Hughes born in 1858 Liverpool father is Robert Newton Hughes mother Ellen Hughes nee Anderton, yet on ancestry there are 7 public trees with father Robert Owen Hughes mother Rose Ann Smyth, as i have his birth cert i am sure i am going down the right road but then start to doubt myself with so many having William Havelock with the wrong parents, is this common? |

Thats him, ihave William Havelock birth & marriage certs both give address as Park St so i know Robert Newton is the correct father but seeing so many other public trees on ancestry going with the second Robert made me doubt myself for a minute, |

Ignore any 'info' which doesn't include proof of accuracy. |

this is the William Hughes son of Robert Owen Hughes and Rosanna - he is William Henry not William Havelock so I think you definitely have the right parents for William Havelock |

I sent a message to someone who had a definate flaw in his tree on Ancestry. He had a woman having a child at 58 - 20 years after her youngest child was born. He sent a message back saying that he'd got the info. off another tree and hadn't had chance to have a good look at it :-S Looking at the census returns it clearly shows that this child was the child of the woman's daughter who lived with them when the daughter died. |

Ancestry trees are not to be trusted. The Americans seem to delight in copying anything they find in another tree without bothering to check it out. I am blowed if I know how my sister came to marry a man born 176 years before her own father was born. And they quote as source 'Ancestry trees'. And they deny that there is an error in their tree. Grrrrr. |

Yes Carol, only last week saw about 6 trees on Ancestry who had the year and place of death of my gg grandmother which I had been seeking for 14 yrs. I contacted them all asking for more information (already suspecting the reply) which was oh I copied it of so and so. |

Have to add I try not to look at trees on Ancestry any more which is hard as you always think you may crack that brick wall. But there are so many wrong trees on my paternal line now that it makes it a farce. |

It's not just Ancestry. It happens on GR as well. We have a contact on here who came up with some new Hot Matches (back when you got them regularly) and I discovered that she had our two sons married to the wrong wives, with the children attached to the wrong parents and several people born in places they had never been to!! |

Thank you all for your comments & help, i thought i was going mad even though i had William Havelock Hughes birth & marriage certs i was beginning to doubt what i was seeing as there are so many other trees with what appears tobe the wrong parents so it seems people must just copy without true facts, thank you all once again |
