Has anyone had any success with Parish Records on GR? I have attempted to find ancestors with absolutely no luck having been invited to search by GR. I can't believe that none of them are listed! Also, it would appear that I have to pay extra on my platinum membership for the privilege, what is the point if i can't enjoy looking and hopefully finding the information.

I haven't had much luck either, don't think all the records are on here!

i too have not been able to find the information. it frustrates me and annoys me that one site will have the information and another says those famous words ' no records found' and you know they are there. these sites are not cheap.

i am finding also if you go to local archives and look at parish records, there are some records missing and information missing. it best to look for archives that hold the bishops transcripts.

it so easy to follow the wrong trail and just accept what seems to fit in.

Have they actually got any records at all? I can't find any of my names either.

There are records there to be found. I found baptisms for all my uncle and his siblings from the late 1800's early 1900's.

However, as JC has said, an index of what is currently available would be a very good idea.

On-line Parish Clerks has Parish Records for the Counties of, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Essex, Lancs, Somerset, Sussex, Warks and Wilts and they are all free.

Alan, true, but the Lancs OLPC I'm interested in only goes up to about 1835. I've found records on GR from the early 1900's. As said, the problem is we don't know what the coverage is

Hi, what really annoys me is that yesterday I got an e-mail inviting me to look at their NEW parish records but like you have all said they omitted to tell me what areas they cover. No luck so far with Lancs so I am guessing they have not covered that are yet.
The advertise it as being wonderful and then you feel so let down. What are they playing at, it cannot be beyond the wit of man to tell us what it covers.
OK, rant over!! :-)

I have tested it out with relatives names and dates that I have seen at the records office in both Staffordshire and Shropshire and on here it just says 'sorry no match' so I am not inclined to add it to my subscription at the moment. Could it be that they are still adding information?

I have just seen this
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/search.page/index/parishbaptism
in which there is a drop down thing to see which counties are allegedly available.
However, trying Brooks 1890 plus or minus 10 years London produced no results which :-S me ;-)
And only one between 1840 and 1910. :-S ;-)

The only record that came up for me was a burial in 1972. However the same person was married and baptised at the same church at the same church but no records could be found. Good job I haven't paid extra for this as I would be very cross. Could not find anyone else even though 8 people all had a connection to the same parish/church

oldbean

oldbean Report 18 Oct 2011 21:12

Thank you all for your replies on this subject, as I thought, not worth paying extra for!

Joy

Joy Report 18 Oct 2011 21:16

Whichever parishes / churches may be available, there is certainly more than one Brooks person during the years that I mentioned; it is not an unusual surname ;-)

I also have had no luck - couldn't understand why nothing was coming up especially with people who I know, most of what I was looking for was Lancashire - I am only a Gold Member and it is expensive - I will not be subscribing for this if it is an extra it would have been nice to have seen these records - maybe GR could do this free for a month and then people could subscribe if they really needed to

i just searched the records looking for my ancestors and there is one there for 1946 in Sydney, New South Wales.

I thought they were only for the UK but maybe not. Don't think it's worth paying to view it though.

The ancestors I'm looking for came from around Gloucestershire but nothing comes up searching for them by the county.

It's possible that some Parish Records havent been transcribed yet. I am currently transcribing St Judes Marriages, Liverpool 1865.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 19 Oct 2011 12:53

Alan,

The parish of North Meols (Southport as it now is) is my particular interest.

Baptisms only go up to 1835, unfortunately, although there are marriages to 1921 (but with a gap from 1837 - 1907) and burials to 1911.

Because Genes and Findmypast are sister companies,it is probable that the records are the same.
FMP coverage is here:-
