Hi Stu,
I would never ever copy someone else's whole tree without asking permission first , would you?
Personally I don't see the satisfaction in copying someone else's work, I always try and find the information myself first, if unable to then I ask for help on the message boards, and if it does come to the situation of somebody else having information that I cannot find myself, I always ask permission before using it as it is that person who has took the time and effort to research it.
I really don't want this 'blown out of proportion' , I just wanted other people opinions on the situation.
I am more than willing to share information, I just can't see the problem in people asking first ?!
Kind regards,
Donna.

I don't see the satisfaction in copying someone else's work either, but the hard fact of the matter is that if you put information into the public domain they you no longer have control over what happens to it.
I also agree it would be nice in a perfect world if each and every member asked first before the used information from your tree, but in practice that hardly ever happens either. The fact that you allow another member to see your tree is in itself considered by many, as implied authority to make use of the information contained in it.
GR mention the subject in their Terms and Conditions "Please note that where you make any of your details, information or Submissions available to other members, they may be able to copy and reproduce such details, information or Submissions against your wishes. Genes Reunited shall not be liable to you in the event that a member copies or reproduces your details, information or Submissions."
I would just make one further comment on photographs added to trees. These can be copied by members who have access to your tree and downloaded to their PC. Personally, for this reason, I don't favour putting photos onto the site. There can also be issues surrounding the copyright of photographs, which doesn't apply in the same way to genealogical research
Please don't let the experience put you off. When I first started on here I was slightly taken aback when someone 'copied' part of my tree. Initially I was going to kick up a stink but having slept on it decided not to and we later became good friends.
Nowadays it doesn't bother me.

Hi Squeaky020 lots & lots of people have taken my work as there own so what it was my choice to joIn GR & my choice to open my tree to others i aint moaning about it as others on here have said you had a choice to withhold living relations i would take it as a complament that some one has taken the time to contact me & share our infomation whats the point of doing a tree if you are going to keep it to yourself take infomation but not give infomation back why open your tree if you dont want anybody to take the infomation from it like i said what would be the point you will always get name collectors like i said familys married into a family more than once i had a family member get married to some one who was already in my tree but i would not have known if i did not have the person in my tree already & yes were did that person come from yes some one else's tree that some one shared with me ages ago i am about to update tham of my findings see it works both ways kind regards Stu

This subject does crop up regularly......why don't people don't read how the site works before they use it
If you don't want people to copy your tree....DON'T give them unrestricted access
As the meerkat ad says..................SIMPLES!

So glad that your life is so wonderful that all you have to worry about is a few words by IGP whose meaning you totally misconstrued.
Wish I could swap places with you................

I had a problem with someone on ancestry before I made my tree private.
She then asked to view my tree on here to which I asked where we were related...no reply so I did not open it to her but she opened hers to me.
I would think every day she adds up to 100 people plus photos and her tree has grown from 13000 at christmas to 27000 today.
What is the point of a huge tree if it is just copied? I know some of the photos she has got off of ancestry trees, but how many people on here have just allowed her access for everything to be taken?
I only have 50 on my tree here, just the grandparents gt grandparents ect not many of the offspring so not much to copy anyway.

Some very different opinions !
Each to their own I guess.
As IGP mentions, I as well do not understand what satisfaction you get from copying others work.
What can I say - Lesson Learnt !! It wont happen again!
If anyone asks me about my family tree at least I can show hard physical evidence of my research , now that is more satisfying than anything!
Thanks for all your opinions!
