Alex I don't think they do check, just keep downloading ged.coms. I once contacted someone re. a match, when he opened his tree to me (which they are always willing to do so you open yours) he had over 30,000 names, needless to say I gave him a wide birth. I only have about 1,300 names and it that has taken me 13 yrs. |

Sadly some people are so excited at the prospect of getting another generation back, often when it means going into the 1600s or 1500s and blindly eagerly copy it all onto their tree - often via linking / merging trees on Ancestry. |

I know Alex, a really distant relation of my husband was in contact. I opened my tree, he was I think so excited that my tree went back to 1200 that he copied it all, no relation to him whatsoever. |
