Genealogy Chat

Well, Frank, my daughter is half Scottish and she is fairly interested in genealogy but I expect she will be watching the England match today. She's fairly interested in that too. Although she looks more like me she has obviously got the football gene from her father (a Dundee United supporter).

Edit: Should have engaged brain when reading your post Frank. On first reading I missed the point entirely - as I have done in the past no doubt.

Well you can congratulate me - I have made a real prize P**** of myself

Went out to collect hte washing as gettig darker and darker. Smaller basket than normal so washing overflowing a bit and peg box wobbling on the top. Then negotiating carring overflowing washing basket and wobbly peg box going down the garden steps.

Go on fill in the next bit for me - I should have just left the pegs behind - no clever **** had to do the lot at once.

One almighty thump & clatter pegs & washing everywhere & a sort of crumpled heap at the bottom - good job I have plenty of padding on the rear end. OH sticks head out of door & askes the silly question "are you alright " well the answer was no - stupid says "I'm fine go back to the race" OH says let me get my shoes on & rushes out. I am sitting back up on the steps trying with very shaky hands to pick up the washing.

OH picks up washing brushes it down & takes it in - comes back to help me pick up the pegs & then asks can you stand - well very shakily yes.

Get in doors - goes to sit down & ouch - I know where i am going to get a few lovely bruises - off to get the witchazle - OH offers to bathe the bruised area for me - bless him. Then I think my arm hurst a bit - pull up sleeve - Oh dear - couple of chunks out above the elbow and by the side & grazed from elbow to half way down & a waking great black bruise apprearing. Also a very large bump - on with the germalene, witchazle and a bandage so I don't hurt it any more or get grease on the laptop & sofa.

Now feeling suitably sorry for myself with a bumper headache, sore rear & very sore arm. I now have a small glass of brandy - provided by OH - but seem to have stopped shaking now.

Wonder what I will look like in the morning - well from the rear at least.

Hope to pop in tomorrow after our trip out - hope the weather stays fine - I think I may have an early night

Ouch! poor Anne - I bet you'll be sore tomorrow. I've fallen out of my back door twice so I have every sympathy with you.

Frank, I've tried to get on FMP tonight but it's soooo slow - guess everyone who hates football is using it. Might wait for the next England game before I try again!!


It's been very quiet on the main road outside of my house tonight....wonder why????????

If anyone wants a laugh, google "vancouver demolition"

...... crew demolishing a building right in the heart of downtown Vancouver on Thursday, about 6 pm, at the tail end of rush hour. First one wall falls into one street, then the other remaining wall falls down into the cross street.

The demolition company says "we didn't do anyhting wrong" "the media is making us look bad" "at the end it is a good news story ............. no-one was injured"!!!!!!!

Just a quick visit,
Cold wet and raining here.
Had entertained the idea of getting up at 6.15am here to use FMP but decided to stay snuggled in my blankets.
Glad I did after reading the comments posted, it would appear every genealogist in the world decided to access the site at the same time

Poor Anne I fully sympathize, having done that same stupid thing in the past, myself. Hope you are not too sore for too long.

Once again poor Anne you are probably counting tickets in your sleep or should I say your nightmares!
I am sorry to say it will be no better next year when NZ hosts the World Cup Rugby. Over here very few NZ'rs will be going to the matches, forced to watch it on TV as the Ticket prices for the main games are selling in access of NZ$1,000 each
and the prices for hotel accommodation is mind boggling, Hotel rooms that are normally $150.-$200 per night are being sold for $750-$900 which gives you an indication as to what more expensive rooms will cost.
Everyone is hoping to cash in on the tourist bonanza that will happen through out NZ as the games are being played throughout all the major centers.
I have heard that hotels in OZ are booking up fast for during this time as a lot of people have figured it will be cheaper to stay there and fly over to the matches on special charted flights.

A couple of people were extremely lucky!

There's going to be a city investigation ... seems the demolition firm might not have had some necessary eprmits


There's going ot be a WorkSafeBC investifation .... our version of your 'elf'nsafety

there'll possibly be a police investigation


and about 6 other investigations as well!


probably also including who hired these cowboys!


I think it is absolutely amazing to see it happen on that video, and to know that no-one was even scratched!

Those ticket prices, hotel prices etc etc .......... are all exactly what we had for the Winter Olympics in February.

Homeowners tried to get in on the anticipated "bonanza" by lsitign their homes for rent for 2 or 3 weeks ................ at obscene prices!

Most were not rented!

Afternoon all - thank you all for your kind words and the comments Frank - made me giggle - a lot less battered & bruised today thank you.

Rear end hurts a bit but its the arm that is really stiff & sore.

Our bus service is 75 years old today so they were doing a special day on the sea front. So we decided to take a little walk down there - its about 15-20 mins normal pace - but we walked through the park - I use to spend hours here as I use to go to school at the end of it.

Had a few memory lane moments. There must have been about 50 buses all shapes & sizes and ages as well as a few old coaches - OH was snapping about with the camera. Then we went for a ride on the Volks Railway - its one of the oldest electric railways and travels along the seafront. you should be able to google it.

It has been a lovely sunny day - only problem is it has very hard wooden bench seats - not so good on my rear today - but we had a lovely time - then we walked back to the aquarium and took a vintage bus ride. They were running the old open top busses from the pier to Rottingdean for free. Never say I tunr down a free ride.

It was lovely on top of the buss you see so much you miss in the car. We ended up in Rottingdean a nice village and still has very narrow roads. We took a turn around the village and by the pond & little country church. Its still very quaint - you may be able to google it. Then we took the vintage bus back and had lunch out in the sunshine - again very hard seats. We went for a walk on the pier and then took a normal bus home.

Oh is doing a good impression of Evelyn's Ron - eyes closed watching the telly - feet up - the chair is making funny snooring noises.

I have Scaramouche on the TV & in my element This is the film I saw years ago and fell in love with Steward Granger - I still love it & I am still in love with Stewart Granger. they don't make films like that anymore & I sware they don't have hansome actors either these days.

I know he was no angel but he had something you cannot get these days - pure charm - actors these days just don't have it.

Well I am off to finish swooning at the screen.

I want to send Frank a very big hug indeed -my sons will be 49 and 46 this year and I must say that I would have killed anyone who did anything to them similar to Frank's experience. You are a very brave man, Frank and I send my warmest love to you.

Now Anne, forget the pegs in future! Leave them there - they'll wait for you. I do hope you are feeling less sore now. Its all so easy isn't it?

Dear OH has finished the 10 days of twice daily injections today and has a break of about three weeks until the next 10 days treatment starts. I have been trying to find different recipes to cook for him, searching through all my many cookery books, saved recipes from Oz, Nigel Slater and all! He finds that he can't bear anything sweet so having lots of lemon and lime juice on food and am just waiting for a lemon sorbet to freeze. I even managed to find 'liquid glucose' (for this recipe) - guess where after trying all sorts of places - at the local Chemist!

Sue, a lot of people don't realise just how cold it can get in Oz in the winter months - we had fantastic frosts when I was a child in northern NSW and my brothers and I used to fight over who broke the ice in the mornings on the horses' drinking trough!

I've promised to go downstairs and sit with OH to watch three recordings he made this week - Halcyon River, Wallander and a new one on Fishing presented by Bernard Cribbens but made by a friend of our older son. I think it was on at 7.00am this morning! The computer is upstairs!

Hi everyone.

Had a very busy day. Not doing much of what I intended to do - which was finish taking contents out of kitchen cupboards, washing them, cleaning shelves and then replacing contents. Did some of that then walked dogs and fed them and me. Noticed rain forecast for tonight - so thought I'd better cut grass. Did that, back and front, noticed pigeons had splattered front windows, cleaned them, made evening meal and I'm shattered. Wish I could have had a day like yours Tabitha (even with a sore end). You should have taken a cushion with you. Glad to hear you're not feeling so bad today.

I too liked Stewart Granger - lovely voice - always a plus with me. Such a shame what happened to him. Did you know he had to have a lung removed. Idiot surgeon removed the good one and left the bad. No hope for him after that. He was incredibly philosophical about it. Have to disagree with you on one thing. Handsome actors - have you not seen Johnny Depp to name just one?

Well, I'm going to do a bit more of what I did last night. Sit in my bedroom and watch one of my favourite men ....... courtesy of BBCi player only in case you are wondering. May even go and watch Who Do You Think You Are - Sarah Jessica Parker later. So a real lazy night. Will probably pop on later to do some more nudging. Thank you received on two of the threads.

Jeannie, you've had a day like me....busy, busy, busy. So glad to sit down and put my feet up. I've had my granddaughter since yesterday and she's a dream to have around but we kept busy. Just taken her home so that she gets a reasonably early night ready for school tomorrow.


It's chilly and damp at the moment and the sky is looking very grey in patches - we could do with some more rain to be honest.

Anne I do hope you are better today,I do take a lot more care with myself these days re;falling over ,it takes a lot longer to get over things like that as we get older.
As Frank said take life nice and easy.

Josie good luck with your new job,you will be great at it,and yes hotel prices are stupid,the average man in the street cannot afford those kind of prices.

We live in a holiday town that swells three fould in Summer and you can just see the prices going up as any of the holidays gets closer.

I think caravan parks are the only ones that stay within the reach of the ordinary family,they get full to overflow.

We went away this weekend to see the brother and his wife,we have not been to see them for a few weeks ,thought we would wait until the Sister In Law was feling a bit more like visitors.
She is doing OK ,waiting for her hair to grow back.

I can just see a faint cloud of dark over her head so maybe that is the start,she is still very tired and a little worried about the future but we just keep up the good thoughts that she will be ok.
She does look a lot better to me ,she has her colour back so that is always a good sign.

I have so much housework it will take me all week to catch up,the Mother In Law want to go to the big smoke on Wednesday,more Roses for her garden.
She is 90yrs this birthday ,I wish she would slow down she makes me tired.

Better get into it I suppose.

Morning campers!

Another lovely day here after a good overnight soaking. Glad I cut the grass.

Surprised you had to Google for handsome 50s & 60s actors Sylvia. Thought it was short-term memory that was affected as we got older:-)))

Richard Todd, Robert Shaw, Jack Hawkins, David Niven, Richard Burton (if you can ignore the skin), John Mills, Bryan Forbes (although mainly small parts had a real soft spot for him - better known for screenplays and directing though), Peter Finch (Aussie but I'll include him anyway - he was gorgeous). Actually saw him walking up the Strand - even better in the flesh) and Sean Connery was around then. I did go to a football match once. It was between Showbiz 11 and a team of Boxers and Jockeys. Sean was playing and he really stood out from the crowd. Bad experience afterwards though. Terrible crush leaving the ground and I nearly got dragged under. Very frightening experience - especially as I was preggers at the time.

Hi Again everyone

OOH!! My favorite actors were George Peppard,Michael Landon,Partrick Swayzy,Robert Mitchum (those eyes) John Wayne,Lawrence Olivier..

I remember as a girl watching all the late night movies with my mum ,being the eldest I got to stay up late waiting for Dad to get home (long distant lorry driver).

I always liked Roger Moore as 007,followed by Pierce Brosnan.

The actors today have a lot to learn from some of the oldies.

I am up for the next birthday at the end of this month,don't remember whos it is though can somebody remind me please.

I have a roast on tonight better go and check it ,he won't eat burnt offerings.

I always preferred Sean Connery as James Bond to be honest. I'm familiar with most of them because my OH loves old films....especially cowboys...John Wayne etc. Then he has a spell of those daft science fiction ones which I loathe. Now and again we go all sentimental and watch black and white 'family' war time films such as This Happy Breed. Then we move on to war time action films - Dambuster type. Only recently we settled down to watch Hobson's Choice with a very young John Mills in it. Not much on live tv to enjoy these days!


Must get some work done - am at hospital appointment with OH this afternoon. See you later. Cx.

Woke up to 3 degrees Celsius this morning and ice on our Car's windscreen Turned into a nice sunny day, if a tad cold it is supposed to turn nasty later on to night and hail, hopefully that will be while I am asleep.
