Don't know if this has already been posted, but the prices for certificates are going up on April 6th, from
£7 to £9.25. See below.

That is a big leap! any justification?

MarilynB Report 1 Mar 2010 18:01

Best get some ordered before April

Wildgoose Report 1 Mar 2010 18:03

That's what I am thinking, Marion.

I'm going to order 4 now for £28; after April I would only get three for that price.

OMG! That is an horrendous increase.

As a protest.......from now on I'm not going to bother looking up and giving the reference number (make them work for the extra money!) because it won't cost any more without it LOL.

The price increase is horrendous isnt it!
I'll have to see which certificates I need to order before they go up.

MarilynB Report 1 Mar 2010 19:09

They will have a rush on certificates and then they will take ages to come. If it goes past the increase date and we still havent received them, wonder what price we will pay.

We are paying for those who want to pay £23.40 for priority service instead of the usual £27.50 if there is not a reference given.

Wow, this mean's i will be paying $20.00 per certificate, sad news indeed .

Marilyn - don't they debit our cards straight away? I shouldn't think we will have to pay the increase because of their work load - will we?

Off to make a list....

MarilynB

MarilynB Report 1 Mar 2010 20:26

I always thought they debited the card when they sent it out, may be wrong, hopefully I am wrong.

Wildgoose Report 1 Mar 2010 20:31

Marilyn - I just don't know. I had thought the certs were bound to go up soon but I imagined a 50p increase.

Guess what a lot of us will be doing tomorrow!

Kathryn Report 1 Mar 2010 21:49

Whilst it seems a lot in one go, it's not actually that bad to be fair - it's the first increase in 7yrs and is only marginally over the rate of inflation when applied from 2003. Still, it's approaching that mental £10 barrier - if I have to break a note to buy something it always seems pricey!

OMG!

Better make a list of all the ones I still want...and get them ordered PDQ!!!

I found out at work today about the rise. It is the first since 2003. If their system works the same as the passport office, as long as your application has been received by the cut off date it should be processed at the lower fee..
They have obviously realised that many of us do family history and there is money to be had.
I am lucky that my mum is an only child and her mother was the eldest so I have original cert going back to the early 1900's.

A 32% increase seems a bit much. They'd be better off charging extra postage for all the overseas orders they get.

I am lucky that I have all the available certificates for my direct line but I still buy others when I find something interesting or need to solve a niggling puzzle and the price rise will certainly make me think twice about ordering from the GRO.

Do we know if local Register Offices will be increasing in line? If not, and they are ones that will issue certs for family history purposes, then I can see them having a big increase in 'business'.

***UPDATE***
Local Register Offices £9 plus any charge for postage
