I can't thank you all enough, I knew I could count on members of GenesReunited !

MargaretManson, the will was very interesting and I have just e-mailed Bryan Hoggath via his web-site in the hope he can throw some light on another Swales member who I have wondered for years what happed to.

Allin Swales's G G Grandmother was Lavina Swales who had an illegimate son, Thomas, in 1782 in Farndale N. Yorks. I have never found what happened to her, whether she ever married or when she died . . . . . so he might be able to help.

Once again folks thankyou for all your help . . . . much appreciated.

I found the will by googling "Allin Swales" It was transcribed by Bryan Hoggarth. Try googling different Swales names. There are other wills that he has transcribed.

The passenger list that I found was listed under "Home Children" on this site:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/index-e.html

The same site has attestation papers for soldiers of WW1.

It is also on Ancestry.

Once again thanks everyone for your help.

Oh wow . . . . . thanks everyone ! ! !

However it's going to be tomorrow now before I have the time to check all this new information out.

Once again thankyou everyone for your help, much appreciated.

Watch this space !

PS - Margaret, you are correct that Allin was the son of Danvers who was the son of Watson. Also I now think Frank was the illegitimate son of Alice Swales (brother of Danvers Allin).

Oops no, I must be wrong, I'm sure they weren't having children 30 odd years after marriage!

OK, I got it . Allin is son of Danvers Allin Swales who is the son of Watson Swales.

A useful portal to LAC is:

drill down to:

for a copy of Frank's attestation papers

And if so they were both Home Children. Why? Had the parents died?
Do you have them on the 1911 census in England?

Thelma

Thelma Report 14 Dec 2009 21:34

That's good, now if Allin and Frank are related then that is Allin on the Empress of Britain and he was only in Canada for six months.

Hi SatNav,

This is fascinating!

I have only today added a Jane Butterwick (nee Swales) to my tree, . . . . I now have to fit this Frank Swales into the tree somewhere!

Many thanks

Just because they travelled to Canada on the same ship does not mean that they are related.

Hi,
Following your message I have sent an e-mail to "Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan". They have replied already saying they are looking into it.
Many thanks

Yes, I see that his name was Allin, his mother's maiden name, I believe. We mistranscribe in Canada too. He doesn't show up on the 1911 Canadian census. Perhaps someone with access to passenger lists could tell you when he came to Canada.

Hi,
Thankyou very much for your help.
The Allen Swales you list with a death date of 14 Nov. 1913 is the date I have, but I didn't have Saskatchewan. His christian name was definately Allin.

Do you have any idea which province?

There are some Ontario Vital Statistices here:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onvsr/index.htm

British Columbia here:

http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm

Manitoba here:

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

Saskatchewan here:

https://www.isc.ca/VitalStatistics/Genealogy/vsgs_srch.aspx

Which has this death but doesn't tell you much:

Registration Number: 3477
Last Name: SWALES
First Name: ALLEN
Sex: M
Death Date (yyyy/mm/dd): 1913 / 11 / 14

If you google the name there's a tree online that has your Allin Swales with this date of death but no other info.

Hi Margaret,
I doubt very much that he was a Home Child. He was of a large family (8) and as far as I know he didn't have a brother Frank. Do you know if Canadian death records are viewable somewhere?
