Nicola,

I don't think you are missing anything, it is just a matter of wading through the treacle.

I wouldn't get too wound up about the spelling of Cole(s) Discrepancies in spelling such as this are actually very common. It wasn't until well into the 20th century that name spellings became formalised in the way we know today. In fact, if searching on Ancestry I would always enter the name as Cole*

Just re-checking the details I would now order the marriage certificate as follows:-

Marriages Jun 1907
Bristol 6a 352
COLES Caroline
COLE William

This will provide the fathers names to enable you to go further back - especially necessary for William.

Caroline's parents are most likely to be Robert and Ellen Coles, living at
23 Catherine Mead St in 1901. Going back, 1891 has Caroline recorded as Cary, aged 1 In 1881 and 1871 you find Robert living with his parents Robert b abt 1819 and Jane Coles (Cole in 1871)

One you have Williams father's name with some certainty then it should be easy to go back through the censuses.

Hi

Yes i think i will order the certificate now, it seems most likely.
Catherine Mead St is only 5 mins away from Spring St and Whitehouse St which are the addresses i have on the other 2 certificates i have
thanks for that

Is there anyone who has access to 1911 census ....and would it give an address or occupation?

Battenburg Report 30 Nov 2009 20:22

Nicola.
You will probably have to ask for a 1911 census look up on another thread. Your request might not be seen on this thread by those who can help

Or like the rest of us £6 95 for 60 credits and look yourself.

30 credits gives you the census image . This gives all the information you need. Its also written in householders own hand. It tells how long the couple have been married, how many children the couple have and how many have died. As well as address and occupation. Once you have paid you can look again at that image for free.
If you dont want to use 30 credits then 10 gets you the details such as how long married plus all the usual details except the extra ones on the image

If you are going to Bedminster try looking for the local history society in the phone book before you go.

I was able to buy maps ( 17 in all) from the local bookshop in my area of interest. They were put out by the history society and went back to 1600s when very few houses were in the eventual town.
They are very interesting even naming the people who lived in the houses on the early maps
