Unable to find Doris in birth register know she was born 1905, came from Wales married John H. S Stewart in 1933 at Holborn.

Have you looked for her in the 1911 census?

If you have her father's name from her marriage cert you should be able to spot her in there - that would give you her place of birth and help a bit.

If she was the eldest in the family she may well have been registered under her mother's name ...

and don't forget that she may not have been registered as Doris Marie


..... it is not uncommon to find a child registered under one name, and then given an additional name at baptism.

The birth registration was not amended in such cases

Sylvia - the b.rego was not USUALLY amended in the case of the addition of a name at baptism, but it could be. If one brought in a baptismal cert showing a different name, then that would be entered into col 10 of a b.rego. One could also make a declaration. (There was a time limit, but I forget what it was). The law said one had to register a birth within 6 w, not that one needed to name the child within 6 w. This was one mechanism to avoid having a family full of "unnamed male"s and "unnamed female"s for those who believed one shouldn't put off until tomorrow anything you could put off until the day after tomorrow.

So, assuming that you have the marriage certificate of the one I have found, what was her father's name and occupation? And was her age about 28 on marriage?

There's far too many Doris Coopers in the 1911 census to check. Really need more info.

Alan has confirmed that the marriage I found is the right one, and that her father was Isaac John Cooper, a miner. And she was 28 on marriage, so born c 1905.

Doesn't help us to find a birth though.

Alan, how do you know her father was from South Wales? Have you found her on the 1911 census with him? Or is this just something that you believe was the case?

Who were the witnesses?

When did she die? Perhaps there will be a date of birth listed next to the reference.
