What a name!

But she was born Dec 1839 as Rosehannah Spinks

Was on the 1841 census in Suffolk St Birmingham as
Rosanna Spinks 2
with Stephen Spinks 50
and Elizabeth Spinks 50

These couldn't have been her parents so who were her parents?

Then was married to John Roath in Birmingham Sept 1857
as Rosehannah Norberry Edith Spinks
So where did the fancy name come from?
Anyone got any clues?
All help very much appreciated
Jill

Helen in Bucks Report 27 Oct 2009 15:39

if you order her birth cert it should give her parents' names, ref from freebmd (free to search)

Births Dec 1839 (>99%)
Spinks Rosehannah Aston 16 173

Why do you assume they can't be her parents? Lots of my ancestors were bearing children into their 50s

brummiejan Report 27 Oct 2009 15:40

Why couldn't they be her parents? I agree more likely to be grandparents but not impossible.

Just for ref:

Spinks Rosehannah Aston 16 173

Yeah, I suppose you're right. It looks as if Father Christmas will have to buy lots of certs for me too!
He gives me anything I ask for.......
I did wonder if they were her parents, but it seemed odd that she was the only child in residence in 1841 census.
Thanks for the input.

So where do you think Roseannah Spinks was on the 1851 census?
I've searched every which way.
Any ideas please?
thanks,

I have just found the birth certificate of George Frederick Roath
17th Nov 1857 and his mother was the informant and gave her name as
Rosanna ROAF formerly Norberry
I can understand the mispronounciation of ROATH but could she have been married before?
But on Free BMD she is married as SPINKS
Any help or advice here please?
cheers,
Jill

This is very odd. She is born a Spinks, and if she had married before she would re-marry under her new name. I am really confused. Also, she was only 18 or so when she married John so that makes a re-marriage unlikely don't you think?

Marriages Sep 1857

Roath John Birmingham 6d 49

I thought ROATH would be an easy name, but it is throwing problems up all along the road.
Someone told me that the name was ROTH earlier in the 1800s, but I haven't got that far yet.
And now I get Rosehannah ......
Keep me in mind please!
Will get certs - in what priority? Her birth cert first I suppose?
cheers and many thanks,
Jill

Well, the birth will get both parents, and might just give a clue to the Norberry name, who knows? On the other hand the marriage might help with her name too, and witnesses might also offer clues! With this lot, you need all the help you can get. What about an early Christmas present and treat yourself to both! Seriously, I always feel inclined to go back in time so personally I'd get marriage first if it were me.

Thanks for that!
Father Christmas says OK...
(dont' drink, don't smoke, don't go out for meals, haven't been on holiday for several years, etc etc etc!)
Never thought I'd get my kicks from expensive bits of green and pink paper. I haven't ordered one on line before, could you just remind me how to go about it please?
Cheers

Order online from www.gro.gov.uk and never pay more than £7.00.

You may find that Norberry is Roseannah's grandmother's maiden name, or that it is a family name handed down. I have a George Lindergreen (or Lindegren) Jenkins Baker in my tree. Jenkins is his mother's maiden name, and Lindergreen is....well, I'm still trying to figure that one out...!

Report back with the details when you have the certs!

brummiejan Report 27 Oct 2009 18:21

You need to access the GRO (general records office) site:
www.gro.gov.uk/
Have a pen and paper ready as you need to register and will need password for the next time! You also need a payment method.
Just follow the instructions. CAUTION be precise with ref numbers year and quarter - they are not very flexible! Certs cost 7 quid, not too bad.
You MUST tell us what you find.

PS what are holidays? Is there life outside family tree research? Surely not.

You are good to me! Thanks so much. I'll count the pennies and let you know what happens. Can't do it tomorrow as I run a quilting group and have to prepare for that.
Hmm. I wonder what we do in our spare time?
Grow family trees - that's what!
cheers

OOops! I thought I had replied and I hadn't.
Thank you so much for all the advice and thoughts.
I was getting excited for a minute there!

Will go and count the pennies and get the marriage cert - or both. On second thoughts, I'll pay by card - that isn't like real money.....

I'll let you know what I find. Can't do it tomorrow as I have quilting group.
What about the postal strike? I suppose it will just take a bit longer if they come out on strike Thursday - Saturday.

Thanks again for all the advice and help - and excitement
cheers

Oh, I have replied twice so you get twice the thanks!

I am beside myself with anticipation - and the postal strike WOULD have to be on just now..... I was nearly as excited about actually ordering online as about getting the cert (well not really, but it was nearly good fun!)
cheers
