I have had this brick wall on my g.grandmothers side for couple of years and thought i would have another go after getting a bit more info from 1911 census but i still can,t get nowhere .
I have never been able to find a marriage between Elizabeth Mason ( called herself Lizzie on 1901 ) and Stephen James Smelt he called himself Charles on 1901 .they both state they were born in Hull .
The 1911 he states he was born in Hull This i know is correct ,Elizabeth is now saying she was born in Brigg Lincolnshire and they had been married for 24 years , i know they could have been lying and never married but how do i get any further back on the Mason side if i can't find out who her parents were .

Cath, just a bit concerned that you have the same couple! Seems a bit odd to change name from Stephen James to Charles. Assuming you have their children in 1901 and 1911?

Yes he was a strange man ,
I have birth cert for 3 out of the 4 children that they had .
On my nans cert (she is the youngest) he says he is Charles Stephen and on the others he changes his mind and calls him self between Charles , Stephen James .

Have you considered whether Elizabeth was married before? Or even if he married another Elizabeth??

Not the one , this is one of the other Smelts in my line .
They were all from Beverley and the name Charles , Stephen and Samuel were all names past down , so there are loads of them .

I know they were still in Hull area in 1895 as one of the children were born there ( have cert ]
First child was born Jan 1889 Sculcaotes Hull ( have cert )

I said there was loads of them ,this is why its so confusing .

Looking at the birth of their 1st child she was born about 1891. It makes sense to think they were living together - or at least nearby - by then. Have you found Charles/James/Stephen in 1891 or 1881?

EDIT: Jonesey too quick! But surely this is the same family?

Found Stephen on 1881 as a boarder in Scarbourgh but none of them on 1891 .
1st child born 1889 .

I know there is another Charles born about the same time as mine but thats not the one i have .

What's the address on Jessie and Arthur's birth certs?
