Well, I should know more about this, but - in metropolitan areas, particularly in London there was a movement for Sunday Schools where children could go and get one decent meal a week plus some learning. The Government became very concerned about this as they felt that the young poor were being doctrinated in socialist views and it was in fact those Sunday Schools which brought about the Education Act because they felt it was better to have control over what the kids were learning. |
