Hi All,

Hoping someone can help I have managed to go back to the early 1830s on the Gutteridge side of my family but have got stumped at the maiden name of my great-great-great-great (and so on) grandmother.

I have searched marriage records but found nothing. Here is what I know:

James was born c1828 in Belton, Leicestershire (and died approx 1888). His wife was Ann something.

They had 6 children - all born in Leicestershre:
Sarah (1847)
John (1851)
Jane (1855)
Mary (1857)
James (1859)
George (1880)

In the census records Ann year of birth ranged from 1830 to 1835 and was suggested that she was born in Warwickshire.

Does anyone have any tips?

Are you sure on George thats a big age difference form James born 1859,
Have you found them on any census, they should show on the 1881 which is free to search on family Search site Plus George birth must have been registered so have you got his birth cert cos that will name his parents.
Maybe Ann died and he remarried a younger woman that was able to have George!!

If you can find all the childrens' birth records I would be tempted to send for the birth cert of your direct ancestor. That would give you your ancestor's mum's name - particularly if, as Shirley has said, there might have been two marriages.

Right here they are on the 1881 census and things dont appear quite right. Daughter Sarh Ann Gutteridge is 33 whilst Ann is 47 so dont think Ann is her mum as she would have been 14 when she was born
George is down as son to James so thinking Ann may have beena second wife .will look for marriages later.

I think George may be a grandson

Yes I found them all on the 1881 census and George was listed as the son (I know I thought it was odd too).

In 1891 he is still living with Ann (listed as his mother)

He is with Ann on the 1871 census

Thanks for the above. I believe Ann was his first wife. Have found her and James on every census from 1851.

Thinking maybe George may have been the older sister's child?

Could be Mary Starkey rather flourished writing but just stating Mary and the GRO ref should get her birth cert

Either he was married twice, or they married very late

(or possibly there are two James Gutteridges marrying an Ann)

I think you need to pick the right birth cert to send for as there may have been two wives:

There are at least two other possible marriages as well in the Warwickshire area - in that timeframe - involving 3 possible Ann's.

I think there is only one James and one Ann (the ages are consistent throughout the censuses for both of them - Ann never gets younger by anymore than 3 yrs or so).

Therefore I assume they:
1/ Never married?
2/ Potentially the oldest daughter gave birth to George and as she was unwed they pretended George was their child?

What are your thoughts?

I think there is only one Ann as her birthplace is the same on the census.

This looks as if it could be the marriage.
