Thanks Jim, you made me realise what Brinsley was saying. I was missing out an essential part of his instructions. Opened my tree as normal and once opened I was only pressing Ctrl expecting something miraculous to happen before my eyes I wasn't clicking on the family tree button again. Have just tried it and it works beautifully too. I'm actually quite a fan of tabs. Sometimes I have a series of tabs open to flick around amongst IGI, GR and BMD for instance.

And thanks Claire for your efforts on my behalf but I've worked it out now. Only thing is you'll think me a bit thick but I'm new to the message boards. I know nudge is a term used on here to remind people something but what does it do and how do you do it please? My IT skills are growing by the minute.

nudge. You add the word on the thread you are interested in.

When a person nudges a thread it brings the thread back to the front. It might be on any board. Records,TTFor Tips.

The thread could be years old
You can then view all that has been added to that thread

If I remember correctly there are different ways to set up your browser which will determine whether or not new tabs or new pages open. So different people me see different effects. Basic principle is the same though.

On Firefox, right clicking gives you the option to select new page or new tab. IE may work similarly.

I use IE8,right clicking on "family tree" does give me the option to open tab or window.Control is not used.

Thanks so much Georgiepie and BrinsleyS and Jim.

I think I discovered it's good to take a quick peak fairly regularly into the front page of the tips board list instead of only when I want to ask something. That way new topics catch your eye. Not only that I can pass on the titbits I've learned without leaving the brunt of it to you other experts.

I learnt a lot of new tree and message board tricks yesterday. Cut and pasted Brinsley's and Jim's instructions to print out and put in my family tree working file in case I end up having not much happening on my tree for a while and have forgotten by the time I get going again. OH will be impressed when he comes home at the weekend at my sudden increase in IT skills. In the old days it was him teaching me. Then things became much more even because both our jobs involve being attached to a computer a good deal fo the day. Nowadays the flow has turned round as I'm the one with more time to discover things particularly on our leisure time forays into the ether.

PS now to remind myself how I can change my name on the boards...
