Hi Elaine, you may already have this info by now but, just in case you haven't, Samuel Sneath was imprisoned for 12 months on15th day October 1850, his crime was "Larceny from the Parson". If you would like the image of the entry in the Criminal register pm me your email address and i will gladly send it to you.

Thanks for that. I did find the 'Christopher Joshua' who was brother to Samuel [the name changer] but he was the 1857 one. He is listed as Joshua in the census but was christened Christopher - it would seem.

From your findings there was another Joshua Sneath in 1888.

This family love using the same names - I have received the marriage cert of Samuel and Margaret [below] and Samuel's father is called Samuel also!!!

So that is Samuel the grandfather, Samuel the father and Samuel the son!!!! No wonder we get confused when looking for our families!

How about this for Joshua?

I think the death is probably one of the other Samuel's born c1841. Shame. I was trying a sideways angle and looked for a marriage or death for Joshua the brother but nothing. Maybe Joshua went abroad. Only found this

General update - having emailed Sally again I have today received the following reply

" I contacted Pat. I forwarded all your emails to her. She did email me saying she would not be of any help. I told her to email you. If she did not I am sorry."

Needless to say - I have heard nothing from Pat - if I do I will let you know!! Which lead me to wonder - why would you put on a website 'email for further details' if you have no further details??? Is this just me who is reading this wrongly - or what?

The numbers dont add up!!! the family below are MY Samuel Sneath's father mother and brother but he was born in c1846 - so the death would make him 72 - but I suppose we have to make room for human error when reporting the death!!!

After having received an initial reply - on 28/6/09 - I have heard nothing!!! I was told that Sally would see if one of "her "cousin" contacts can help you. Pat was one line and I was another. I don't think Snead was in mine. I will see if I can find someone to help you."

I have pointed out that the name was Sneath and NOT Snead and I have heard nothing since. Will update you all if I get an update!!

Hi again Elaine - yeah, that sort of stuff happens.

Back on 14/4/09, I posted re my gg gran - well, I found a tree containing her sister (at least I think so), and I contacted the tree owner abt 1 y ago - I don't recall when, and I've lost my email via a disk crash 8 m back. Anyway, I got a reply last week - he'd laid off genealogy for a while - so I sent him some scans, and he sent back my gg gran's bro-in-law's d.cert. He'll be buying the sister's d.cert this week, so I'll have confirmation of the siblingship as it's a Scottish d.rego. The sister is my correspondent's ggg gran.

Just goes to show s**t isn't the only thing that floats to the top.

Some 2 months later - I have a lead on the Samuel Sneath prisoner in 1851.

I had not luck with the email address which Val found for me through googling his name - the mail kept being returned to me. I posted messages on the website appealling for anyone with any knowledge of how to get in touch with them to get in touch - nothing.

Whilst searching the site I happened upon someone who claimed to know these people in one of her postings. I emailed and no response.

I tried again today - before I deleted her from my sent emails box - AND GOT A REPLY!!!

She says that yes she does know these people and I am awaiting some response to my explainations as to why I would like to get in touch with them.

Will keep you posted - morale of this stroy - never give up!!!

I dont quite know the best way to get any further on this - I have searched for a marriage between Samuel and Eliza, but with them BOTH seeming to use different names it is increasingly difficult [if, of course, they married at all?]

I suppose I should get in touch with the only living relative and [not tell her that i think her grandmother was illegitimate] but ask her who would have any original marriage certs and birth certs for this lot. [that is a jolly good idea, in fact - someone MUST have them!!]

Hi all just read this with interest.
My grandfather changed his surname and middle name - kept christian name - due to (the best of family knowledge) a dispute with his younger brother. When he joined up in 1915 he used his 'new middle initial and surname, and also the same when he married. Hence his father has the incorrect surname on marriage cert! My nan didn't know of all this until after they were married and so her 2 eldest daughters were given my grandads original surname as their middle names. We think she was trying to ensure the girsl weren't considered illegitimate or something.
When my grandad retired both my dad and an uncle had to sign papers saying that they had known him as xxx for so many years so grandad could get his pension.
Funny lot families aren't they!

i havent yet found the marriage of Eliza and Samuel. I did order a death cert for an Eliza Snow, but it seems that it is not the right Eliza - as she is recorded to be the widow of Edward Snow.

i havent yet found the death of Samuel.
