Thought I would let you know that I have had success with my Oxfordshire records curtesy of Margaret Rose, yet another very nice and helpful person. She found for me Benjamin Smiths birth at Henley St. Mary and his parents marriage William Smith to Hester Beal 4th November 1816 at Great Tew. William had several siblings (needless to say), his parents were Moses Smith and Mary Kench married 7th November 1775 in Sandford St. Martin. Margaret also found that Hester died in 1825 and William remarries a Charlotte Paintin in 1828, they had 5 more children to add to the 4 including Benjamin he had with Hester. William outlived both his wives dying in 1869 and his father Moses lived to be 80 and died in 1834.
So from having a big blank on my Smith side thanks to you lovely folk I have found them back to the late 1700's, so am feeling very very happy. Thank you all so much.
Well Sharon, your Easter break will soon be here, hope the weather lets you make the most of it - I am gathering you are a teacher, I hear "count downs" from a teacher friend in our village too! Eight years seems like forever now, but then we have lived in our village for almost 8 years and the time has gone so quickly, doesn't seem possible. Don't put that big chart crossing off the days just yet - it will take up far too much space!!

Hello again Sharon,
Yes I'm still around, just had a surprise 4 day visit from my ma-in-law, I am now in recovery mode, needless to say had to blitz the house before her arrival and then do my "entertaining" bit!!
Well in between all that, well before actually I had a good read of all you had sent me and then went back to the census records on Ancestry to try and put a marker on Benjamin Smith's birth place. Some of them have his place of birth as Oxfordshire (Henley), but with all sorts of weird and wonderful spellings, he is working at a, if I remember correctly, sawmill and so not listed with Mary and the children, on one I think the 1851, the copy is so faint difficult to make out. I am going to put a new thread up to see if anyone has info on Oxfordshire Records for me, may be able to trace his father (William) and mother plus other children, it's worth a shot after you have been so helpful, this would round off my "Smiths" nicely.
I'll let you know how I get on - oh and where has our nice Spring weather gone to??

Nice to hear from you, Sharon is doing a grand job for me, you Genes folk are being so helpful. Thanks for your offer of help on Derbyshire, if I come across a "branch" hanging over the border I'll be in touch! Woudn't you know if just when I have lots to get my teeth into the weather improves and the garden having suffered in the frost this winter has suddenly come to life, or rather the weeds have - why do weeds survive extreme weather and treasured plants having been around for years keel over???

Just thought I'd have a quick look before putting the kettle on, see you have been busy again. Yes you are right the marriage witnesses could be relatives other than parents, thanks for the look ups on possibe Benjamin Smith births, marriage and siblings too. You are so patient scanning thought all those records for me, I really have no excuse for not updating all my records now!! Thanks for the Gelsthorpe marriage look up too, would have been usseful if that Joseph had married an Elizabeth instead of a Mary - most thoughtless.

the only marriage i can find for joseph gelsthorpe is to mary goodwin 25 12 1818 teversal could it be possible the witnesses were her father and sister or maybe brother and sister in law ill see if i can find a marriage for a joseph to an elizabeth before 1840 but around that sort of date

the nearest baptism i can find for a benjamin smith 1818 is 18 2 1817 sutton in ashfield to benjamin and sarah he being a butcher
the marriage possible is sarah ward 26 8 1803 sutton in ash

Just received this mornings post and certificates for marriage of Benjamin Smith and Mary Gelsthorpe, confirms the info you gave me, says residence at time of marriage Hucknall under Huthwaite for both of them. Benjamins father is a WILLIAM SMITH labourer and Mary's a JOSEPH GELSTHORPE collier, witnesses at marriage Joseph Gelsthorpe and Elizabeth Gelsthorpe, sounds like her parents, I know you have found deaths for those names, any chance of a marriage look up for them, or even birth records Benjamin aged 22 but of course don't know if he is the eldest child.
Also got birth certificate for son William 9th July 1840 (that was a close one), marriage took place 7th June!! father Benjamin Smith mother Mary Smith formerly Gelsthorpe residence Hucknall under Huthwaite.
I finally believe it is the right lot of Smiths, especially having found Benjamins father to be a William.

Have noted all the death records you have found for me, that is a sad one the 1837 deaths, makes you realise what a harsh world our ancestors lived in.
I shall be copying up all you have found for me and getting it into some sort of order ready to update my tree (another job on the back burner). By the way those fairies are having another day off - you can't get the staff these days.

the smith deaths are more difficult to trace but i think benjamin 1818 died march 1865 mansfield on free bmd there is also a couple of marias on there
but i will keep looking i hope the magic fairy appears for the housework it would be lovely

You're doing a grand job Sharon, all these names and dates are fascinating, well some of the Gelsthorpes lived to good ages didn't they, 83 and 94 pretty good going for that period in time I would have thought, maybe that's where I mother gets her long life gene from she had her 98th birthday 2 weeks ago! Any sign of deaths for the Smith lot, Benjamin, Mary and any of their children. I am awaiting the arrival of cerificates for marriage of Benjamin and Mary and birth of William, keeping everything crossed it all ties in. Don't think there was a record for Benjamin's birth in that area, I seem to have seen his place of birth as Oxfordshire on a census record. I'm really chuffed at what you have discovered for me, just need a free week to add it all to my tree and update my records, something I have neglected for ages, somehow when you are "stuck" you seem to be skirting around one bit of the family which has stopped me doing the rest - don't think I have an excuse now. Do you think the fairies will come and do the housework for a while so that I can put a few more pieces in my family jigsaw? No that's what I thought.

I am about to post a fresh thread to see if anyone can get me over the hurdle on my dad's side of the family, my other stumbling block, and trace a couple of death records in the 1920's.30's which elude me.
