Yeah - my Slessor ancestors whose MI I referred to earlier are buried next to Basil Slessor. I hardly think this is coincidence, but I'm not able to establish a connection to either William (the more likely choice), or to Christian.

I guess it's just another of those things that'll keep on bugging me - welcome to the club.

Mgnv,
well i don't think they would have left any wills,Isn't it annoying that it's so hard to track people from that era.
Thank god for the census and registration when that came in
many thanks for all that work

I actually think the 5 baptisms 1776-1785 are John + Wm's uncles and aunts, not their sibs. This would mean J+W's dad John (s/o John) was born before that lot, probably in someplace other than Cruden. Course, it's all pure guess work here, and I can't think how one could check things out either way, unless maybe one got hold of a will.

Mgnv
so sorry not to get back to you sooner, but had lot's of family stuff to do.
But this is all very very good news
I never could understand why there weren't more siblings for John it seemed strange for the times.
Don't know why i couldn't find them
John Geddes and Jane Mckesser are mine
I do feel sure now that Margaret cruden and John are the actual parents of my John,I've been looking upwards of 1798 for some reason and never thought to go backwards!
some of the info i have but a lot i don't,so thanks for that. Also don't have Sangster on my tree at the mo,but often related surnames crop up as middle names,so will keep my eyes open for it
many many thanks

Since John, h/o Margt was a=65-69 in 1841, this set are the right age to be his younger sibs.
Presumably, since they're no earlier Geddes in the OPR, your John + parents migrated in from another parish.

Hi Kathy,
i think the one's I'm after are the Hillhead of Gask.
So i think that John married to Jane Mckisser is the 1833 one as the dates do match,Also confirms his mother Margaret Cruden's death in 1844,she doesn't appear on the 1851 census.Plus mentions his brother William
So you have done a fantastic job for me
thank you very much indeed.

Catherine

You managed to catch me before I started work

I checked the MI's for Cruden but there were no entries for Geddes .This is an unpublished record and not complete .

Had a look at burials for Cruden in the OPR's

John Geddes Hillhead of Gask buried 29 July 1833
Robert Geddes child of Wm Geddes Hillhead of Gask buried 2 feb 1843
Margaret Geddes Hillhead of Gask wife of John Geddes buried 5 oct 1844
Geddes child of John Geddes ( blacksmith ) Bogbrae buried 29 dec 1851
Mary Geddes Bogbrae buried 7 may 1853

I copied all the Geddes burials in case they are related
Hope this helps

Thanks mgnv,
Some of this i already have, but some i don't,so i will be able to cross reference.
I don't have the death of Margaret Cruden and John Geddes,so it seems they may have passed away between the census ,at one time i thought that this John may have died young as well as i could only find the two children for them,John/William,which seemed unusual in those days.

It looks like these may be the children of John and Jane and Jane and George Willox.

Blue1 Report 6 Feb 2009 09:47

Hi Kathy,

Thanks so much for the offer.

I have
John Geddes born Cruden c1798 married to Jane Mckisser on the
8 June 1820 Cruden
I have a copy of the OPR to confirm this

They had four children
Margaret 1820 Cruden
John 1822 Cruden
Christian 1823 Cruden
Alexander 1828 Cruden (this is my link)
William 1831 Cruden

John dies sometime after 1831 and before 1 Feb 1836
when Jane marries George Willox in Rathen
On Jane's death cert it states that she was the widow of John and that he was a Labourer.

I Also think that Johns parents were John Geddes and Margaret Cruden.
Who married in Cruden in 1802,although have no definite proof at the moment.John also had a brother William born 1803.

Hope this makes some sense

There's typically two levels of Scottish parish burial records - skimpy or none.
Go to the IGI search screen and do a place search in library - library catalog, then drill down, and click on the "view film notes" button when it appears at top right.

Title Parish registers for Cruden, 1707-1854
Authors Church of Scotland. Parish Church of Cruden (Aberdeenshire) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of O.P.R. ms. no. 185 in the New Register House, Edinburgh.
Missing years: Marriages, Aug. 1718-Mar. 1721; burials, Dec. 1713-May 1794, only three entries 1807-1828.

Note Location Film
Vol. 1. Baptisms, 1707-1759, marriages, 1707-1759, burials, 1707-1811. v. 2. Baptisms, 1760-1819, marriages, 1760-1819, burials, 1828-1854. v. 3. Baptisms, 1820-1854, marriages, 1820-1854. (Preferred film for viewing. Use this before ordering the other filming.) FHL BRITISH Film 993178

You can rent this film to view at your local LDS FHC. You can find an FHC in the centre col of the home page.

As has been suggested here, one alternative is MIs. A lot of ABD MIs are indexed at:
http://www.abdnet.co.uk/mi-index/
but, to take one example:
OLD DEER - Names and dates on Stone Number 113:
Margaret MURRAY 19 Feb 1805
William SLESSER 28 Nov 1806
Jannet SLEESOR 24 Mar 1811
Christian SLESSER 20 Jan 1857
William SLESSER 2 Dec 1865

NOTE: This is not the complete inscription
You will find the full text in booklet reference number u/p from ANESFHS

I don't have the complete inscription on this PC, but it says the stone was erected by Wm d 1865, in memory of his parents, Wm + Margt, his sister Jannet, and his wife Christian. Ages might have been given also.

Note that women were buried under their maiden surnames (Christian was d/o John Slesser + Agnes Dalgarno). The two post-1855 dates are death dates, not burials. Who knows about the rest.

There isn't a booklet out for Cruden, but I'm sure ANESFHS have some data.
In case your folks got attracted by the big city lights in the next parish, you might also check:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/phdgen/

the first in 1820 the year he married and the last 1831,his wife remarried in about 1835,so i assume he died 1831-1834?

Hi Many area's in Scotland have published pre 1855 Memorial Inscription books. Its amazing the amount of information you can get from these. This is an ongoing thing so if a book is not published for that area yet it could be in the pipeline. Contact the local Family history Society for whatever area it is. Where about in Scotland did they die ? I have some of these books for the Dumfries area.
