I've written to the cemetery offices in Toronto, Canada for my ancestors. They have been extremely helpful in giving me information, including informants. If you explain who you are, and what relationship you have to the deceased, they may give you information as well.

There is at least one person on Ancestry with Alanson Baldwin in their tree.

PS If you try the FamilySearch, Record Search Pilot, and type: Baldwin, Carleton, Ontario, Canada, you will find quite a few Baldwins, possibly some of yours.

My goodness, you both are marvelous so much information in such a short time. Sorry I was away for a while I had to cook the families dinner and then my husband pinched my lap top. I was looking up English origins as on one of the census stated their ethnic origin was English. I would never have dreamed of NY origins.

Donna, if the research others have done is correct, the Baldwin's were in America for quite some time! You probably can get more information about the Canadian Baldwins from the sites we've recommended. You may be able to find out more about your "recent" family if you are able to contact the other researchers.

Ticonderoga is a wonderful place, full of history. There's a fort there built in the 1700's during the French & Indian wars, used again during the American Revolution. It's a place we love to visit!

Look at the last page of "Improvements on Churns" patent, by William H. Baldwin, under witness. If you don't remember seeing the name before, refer back to William's immigration record...the passenger listed above William's name.

"...A portion of the original mill put up under the eye of Mr. Bronson is still standing. It embodied all the "modern improvements" found at that time in such mills, as well as iron gates of novel model, constructed after designs prepared by Mr. Bronson, and which have since been introduced and are now used in most of the gang sawmills on the Ottawa river.

Messrs. Harris and Bronson were soon followed to this point by Alanson H. Baldwin, of New York, and Levi Young, of Maine, and the several gentlemen began the putting in of a series of costly river improvements, which, says a writer in the North-western Lumberman, of Chicago, "have made the driving of saw logs on the mighty Ottawa a matter of greater safety and certainty than upon many a smaller stream which has no large lakes to act as reservoirs for checking the fury of the spring freshets."..."

Donna, if you are interested in this family, there is a book that supposedly references Alanson H. Baldwin (pages 96, 98, 115, 121, 122, 135, 198 and 199). One cannot view those pages. I don't know if you might be interested in purchasing the book (especially since we don't know what is written about Alanson!). W.H. Baldwin is mentioned on page 199.

Yes, the housework is suffering. I am currently scurrying about the house, trying to get chores done before my family gets home. Luckily, they don't like genealogy, so they never check here to see just how long I do sit around.

However! I don't sleep well at night, and that's when I do sometimes do more housework (while they are asleep), so I guess it almost evens itself out. At least, I like to think so. ;)
