I'm trying to find my Ellis branch and while I was able to find them in 1881 and 1891 but I can't seem to find the family before this.

The family are;

William Ellis c1840
Ann Ellis 1843 (this is exact as I have her birth cert) - wife
James Ellis 1869 - son
William Ellis 1871 - son

All other children including my great grandmother were born after this,

Annie 1872
May Eliza 1874
Harry 1877
Alfred 1879
Minnie 1880
Maud 1883

If anyone can give me some direction that would be great. I've been searching on find my past since that's where i have the credits but if someone thinks I'm better off searching elsewhere please let me know.

Can you let us know what town they were living in on the 81 census and if you have already found a marriage and where that took place

The marriage cert is hard to read but it looks as though they were living in Brick Lane, Middlesex.

In 1881 they were living in Nelson St, Mile End Town.

In 1891 they were living in Upper East Smithfield, Tower Hill.

Which is Ironically where they were living when Ann died in 1902. She'd been blind for 5yrs and died as a result of M.S.

If they were living in the same place in 1891 and 1902 (and assuming they hadn't moved about a bit in the meantime) have you tried looking up some of their 1891 neighbours and then trying to find them in 1901?

It is possible that they have been badly mistranscribed in 1901 but one of the neighbours might still be around ...

Ozibird's 1851 census lookup ties in nicely with the IGI christening with the parents being a match. Is Henry the father on William and Ann's marriage certificate???

As for other info;

Ann's maiden name was Shillcock, her father's name was James and he was a bookbinder.

Ann married in 1866 at St Mary's Spital Square.

William' s father was Thomas and he was a cooper.

So that means that the 1841 and 1851 census's are the wrong ones.
