Irene thank you for that sound advice. I am not sure now that they even got married!!! I think the record that I had found is the wrong person. Which goes a long way to explaining the problem!!! You are right, in as much, as I think I am trying to do to much at once. Am going to send of for some certs and see what info I can glean from there. Thanks for the help

I have just had a look and found the one who was 3 in Norwood which is in the Croydon District 1901 adopted.

I have also found a birth for Cissie King 1897 in the Croydon district

I did notice that a Step Daughter Amy Tripp was 19 in 1901, I wonder if Cissie could be her child she would be old enough or some other daughter who is not present in 1901. That may be worth checking out.

Not sure what you have been saying here but it looks like Cissie King married Colin Steven 1915 am I right so far.

You then say that Cissie married again, to Edward Porter, how sure are you that they did marry when you think they did. Could it have been later.

What you need to do if you know where they were living and possibly died check the deaths in that parish and see if you can find either. Colin could have died later than you think, so try after Gwen the child was born.

Have you got the marriage certificate yet if not then I would get it that would give the fathers name and occupation for both bride and groom, and with luck their ages.

So you know when they married
Find Colins death, it may mean looking for quite some time but it will be worth it in the end, once you have found that then
find marriage to Edward Porter!!

Sometimes too much informartion can cloud what you are looking at..

Before I go, there are a couple of marriages for an Irene M. Stevens in 1936. One is in Southwark (London) and the other in Eastbourne.

The first is to someone called Sage. Southwark, 1d, 222, June qtr. 1936.

The other to someone called Sellers, Eastbourne, 2b, 197, June qtr. 1936.

These may not be yours but I thought they were worth mentioning.

Ancestry have deaths up to 2005, but you would need married names if it's the sisters you are looking for.

Thank you so much for giving me your time. A fresh pair of eyes makes all the difference. I just kept going round in circles and not making any headway.
I now know what to do next. Would the records of any deaths be available if they are quite recent or do you have to go the registration office concerned for something which might be recent? Do you know?

It's always a good idea to ask for certificates for Christmas presents. When I first started doing my family tree I used to do this and it helps a great deal. £7 isn't too much for someone to pay for a present and you get something you really want instead of something that ends up at the back of a cupboard, lol.

Defineltly time to spend some money and get the certs for all these people, it will fill in the gaps and maybe then I can try and find out if any of the family is still living. My Mum Gwen died when I was very young which is the reason for trying to go forward.

That sounds like the right people. I know of one sister which is Patricia and there was another called Nin, wonder if that is Irene? I need to get the certs for these and that would confirm who their parents were. I will do that after Xmas. Thanks for helping me.

I would say that is the most likely birth for Cissie and that she is the one who is recorded as "adopted daughter" on the 1901 census Her adoptive parents on the census are given as Edwin and Annie King. It might be worth ordering the birth certificate to see who the birth parents were recorded as. Perhaps Edwin and Annie were related to her parents. (maybe they were her aunt and uncle??)

Yes that's the one I have. Another kind person found a Cissie on the 1901 census but she is recorded as being adopted and I don't know if it is the correct Cissie. It does seem to be a bit of an unusual name though, so maybe. King isn't though!!

I hadn't thought of that, I just assumed they had married. That would certainly solve the reason as to why it seems so confusing.
There are quite a few skeletons in this side of the family so it is more than likely that that is the case. I also think that Cissie was adopted so it is giving me lots of headaches. I will continue to search and think that now is the time to actually get the certs for Cissie and go backwards. I'm trying to trace her sisters who are possibly still alive and I'm just searching every avenue. Thank you for your help it is appreciated.

Are you certain that Cissie and Edward actually married. Between the wars a lot of marriages broke up and the people involved often just went on to live as man and wife with another partner as divorce was expensive and difficult to get.

My own in-laws did this.

Sorry, I've confused you. She was married the first time as Cissie King. I just meant that Cissie was obviously her full name and it wasn't a nickname for Margaret or anything else.

The second time she married she should have married as Cissie Stevens.
