Hi i am stuck in 1792 will my great great great grandparents Thomas Lees and Alice Shepard married in Rochdale 1811 and was wondering if anybody had a tips how to get back another generation as the marriage record for this period gives nothing away

A parish register entry of their marriage will give witness names. Hopefully these might be family. Often the couple married in her home parish, so look for her baptism possibly linked to witness names, eg witness may be her brother, sister or other family member.
Look for Wills in both surnames. We have seen them stating things like, ..to my daughter Ann, now wife of Joe Bloggs, a miller of ( wherever )

The clues are often out there...if we could only find them...

Thanks for that i know thomas had a farm in 1841 then alice farmed it in 1851 where would i find out any will that was left i try racking my brains but havent a clue as to where these will be kept.

The marriage on BVRI which I presume you already have. As you say it gives nothing away!

yeah margaret it took me weeks to find that record but it did'nt really help me other than give me the date ! how did you find that information out so quickly ?

Copies of Wills are often on microfilm at the Records Office local to the address.

Have a browse on the Access to Archives site.
It takes a bit of patience, but there are some gems of information there sometimes.

I got the record from my BVRI discs, Adam. BVRI is British Vital Records Index. I purchased these discs many years ago. I've had great fun lately finding records for other people but have never found anything for myself from them.

Have you tried this site? Couldn't see anything definitely about Thomas or Alice but there might be something on there that you recognise.

There seems to be a break in records on that site from 1700 to 1813 whats the reason for this ?

It's probably that whoever's volunteering to transcribe the records hasn't done that particular batch yet. (I'm guessing at that, as I've just contacted them myself to ask about transcribing - Ormskirk, for instance, is covered between c.1740 and 1812 or something for marriages but the next lot on there don't start till 1820.)

Suppose the other possibility is that for some reason the church was closed between that period, although I just looked on the Lancashire Records Office webpage and it looks like they do have 1811 covered on microfilm.

is that her baptism ?????

There is a marriage on LancsOPC for a James Shepherd and Sarah Fletcher 3rd Jan 1785 at St Chads Rochdale, Witness Robt Lord.

what a shame there is such a big gap i have tried to look at the records in Rochdale on microfiche but they are unreadable where will the origanals be ?????

There are some records at Preston records office, I think - I'm hoping to get there myself in the next week or so if you're too far away. I can always see what I can find there.

I will just check what it says on the Lancs records office thing I downloaded - looks like they have the microfilmed marriages between 1661 and 1836 on one batch, which could be the one you want.

thanks kate your a star i wanna get to preston one day but its only open one saturday a month and i work all week plus were having a baby in less than two weeks so any help will be gratefully recieved.....

Could anyone please tell me if someone lived in norden rochdale and did'nt want to walk all the way to st chads in the early 1800's or late 1790's where could they get their children baptised ? there must be other churches around, i know they had to get married in st chads but not necessarily baptised
