Hi Sue,

Thanks for that. I have been thinking today and I will investigate both possibilities at the same time.

I am going to contact a friend who lives in the area and ask what resources she can access.

This is her on the 1891 census and there are no employment details against her unless I have missed something.

Hi Sue,

The faint writing after occupation looks to me as "buys to sell"..maybe first word is Agent? Above is "Own" Maybe she was her own agent - self employed?

1891 census sarah frost is a stationer "In her own account" So, she was self-employed at that time.

If you need to contact the local archives their e-mail is
[email protected]
I'm waiting for a response from them at the mo. Wish they'd get their finger out! (5 days and counting!)

Don't tell them I said this but the woman who runs the archives is rather aloof. I think she's a librarian who doesn't like people and you get the feeling that she is only allowing you to look at her archives because she has to!

Heather

Heather Report 10 Nov 2008 12:29

It was O.C. and Jill who suggested it. :)

Thank you Heather,

I'll try this route first as my Grandma was also a seamstress and she must have met the alleged father somewhere!

No doubt I'll be back for further help from everyone.

Thanks again

Hi guys, just reporting back from FTF's efforts.
O.C. and Jill came up with the samish possible occupation:

"Does it say Agular, with "fur" written over the top? If so, she maybe meant Aiguiller, which was some kind of needlewoman in either the fur trade, or in the making of aiguilles for unforms. given the daughter is a fancy textile embroidress, this might just fit!

There's something very faint written after it and I wonder if it is "great coats"."

Now bearing in mind the daughters occupations .................

Thanks Christine. I'll try emailing a friend who works in a library close to the area.

You could ask at the relevant council offices for the area.
Maybe some old 'rights' are still active today?

Hi Kath,

When GB suggested that I googled for info in that area. Obviously Walthamstow is near to Epping Forest and the land around Whipps Cross, where cattle are still free to roam, as far as I know.

I have no idea where I would find further info if that is the occupation. I spent a quick 40 minutes looking for online records to no avail.

It's bloomin' frustrating.

Could it be Agister. From old occupations site:-

Agister - Official of Royal Forests. In the New Forest, In charge of the ponies.

There is a forest near Walthamstow where they were living.

UPDATE - sorry Glitter Baby, just realised you said this ages ago!!
