was ordering some certs last night, noticed that Ancestry now has a facitily to order straight form there so thought we would give it a go....OMG £19.99 for 1 certificate with standard deliviery ( up to 16 working days) and for Epress delivery (up to 6 days) an enourmous £39.99!!!

They are having a laugh, why would anyone want to pay £19.99 let alone £39.99 when you can order your cert direct from the GRO for £7....so watch out if you are a newby to ancestry (or you know onw) please please please let them know not to be duped into paying way over the odds for their certificates

I agree Webster, Newies are more likely to read the Tips board (we hope!) & no one wants them to pay these prices

I always order my certs directly from the Register Office. You get a more personal service, have even had them check that they have it before I sent order off, and some don't even ask for the postage !

post script to my above post
I have just phoned Caerphilly Register Office to check that they hold a Cert. The lady went to check and phoned me back in 10 mins to confirm they had. I paid by debit card and it will be in post 1st class today. You don't get that service with GRO !

While on the subject of certificates. I am now the proud owner of three that disappointingly are not connected to my family. Where am I going wrong? Is there anything I can do with them?

We in the UK are able to order from the GRO with a reasonable delivery time.

Ancestry covers the whole world and I wonder if it is as easy for people overseas ?

There is no problem using the GRO from abroad.

It appears Ancestry is just wanting to get extra cash.

Hi Webster the big fat cat, I hadn't tried to order anything from Ancestry for a couple of months so you can guess my reaction when I realised that they had changed the site and were now using their own agent to provide the service!! Of course I went straight back to GRO and ordered and now awaiting the certificate before I can go on with my next step. Just saw this when checking something out so glad that other people have realised that these people are feeding off of people!

I order certs from GRO to my address abroad and they don't charge me postage. Takes a bit longer but usually have them within 2 weeks. Great service

Local reg offices might be good but my area of interest does not have an online order service.

Since Im overseas its better to order from GRO with free postage.

I have written to Ancestry re the cost of £19.99 being imposed for buying certs through their "shop".

I thought that you may be interested to read the reply

"Thank you for your email.

We used to link to the GRO, but now this service is through our Shop tab which is hosted by Elmbank. We send the request to the GRO and have to pay fees and costs for providing this service. As always, you can order certificates directly from the GRO's site at their cost."

I only wish that I could provide a service of passing on emails at £12.99 a time!
