Hi Jean

If Harriet was born in Dec 1880, she'd have been concieved in about March or April so that was plenty of time for Hannah to get pregnant again.

Who was John Tilson's first wife and when did she die?

Jean, What makes you think the Henry Dwyer born 1879 in Poplar wasn't another of their children?

Hi Ben forgot to say John Tilson was a widower himself with three of his own children he brought into the marriage two sons and a daughter so poor old Hannah had six to fend for after Lucy died, she never married again but took in lodgers.Jean

Hi

If Hannah remarried within a year she must have known John Tilson beforehand and he probably was a friend of the family or was a shoulder to cry on for her when Henry died and a bond formed between them. It is a shame that he died 5 years later but you have to bear in mind that people had rubbish lives in those days, especially in crowded cities such as London.

TB was a nasty illness in those days. There were very few remedies for the illness and if you developed the full disease, it was virtually terminal. It also took some time to kill so the sufferer must have been in a lot of pain and if so, would need to be kept away from others for fear of infection.

Hi Benjamin as i believe i mentioned that Samuel Henry Dwyer was born 8th September 1872 and died on the 30th September 1872,Father Henry Dwyer,Both Birth and death cert only give Bloxwich as place of B/D.Henry died 23rd March 1888 living at 29 Tooke street they seemed to move up and down the street at will as I one addy at number 10/13and one at 29,and on the 22nd December 1888 Hannah married John Tilson but then he died in 1894 of TB as Lucy Ann {born 1874} who died of the same thing a month later {as Lucy Ann Haines aged 20years old}.Jean

Benjamin Report 14 Sep 2008 18:05

I just researched.

Bloxwich is in Walsall near Birmingham. Lucy Dwyer was born in 1874 and there were no more birth in Walsall district until 1880. There was a birth in Poplar in June Qtr 1878 for Eleanor Elizabeth Dwyer. Its a pity mothers maiden names arent in the indexes for that time. You need to maybe check any records to see if Eleanor or Henry is born to Henry & Hannah.

I estimate a move to London inbetween 1875 and 1878. I am in the opinion that once Lucy was born, the family decided to move to London for better wages.

The birth of Lucy probably pushed them to move to London. A lot of people grew up in London probably never knowing they werent actually born there but their parents had moved there when they were a baby. My above mentioned gggran was a fine example of this. I bet she'd of been gutted if she found that she wasnt actually a birth Londoner.

When did Hannah remarry and how long after Henry died in 1888?

Thank you Benjamin for your input,they{Henry/Hannah}had another Daughter Eliza in 1883 then Henry died 5yrs later in 1888,and Hannah remarried and the whole family plus another new baby with new husband moved to Custom House E16 where Harriet {my Granma}married and had her family all born there right down to my mother, Hannah lived to be 76yrs old and died in 1924.its the years in between 1874/to 1881. I cant find any trace of them.Jean

London was the magnet for people from all over the country. If a couple needed better money opportunities, and had just had a new baby, then they'd often move there to better their earning opportunities.

Hi

Yes Nickys suggestions are worth considering.

As an example of this, My great, great grandmother Kate Roberts was born in Sussex in December 1863 but her parents Thomas & Mary Ann moved to London a couple of months later. The 1871 census for then in Bow gives her correct birthplace whereas subsequent censuses give London as her birthplace. She probably though that she was born in London but wasnt actually.

Have just seen a birth registered for a Henry Dwyer 1879 in Poplar. Baby Henry Dwyer died in Poplar in 1880. So that takes you back to them being in Poplar by 1879.

Nickydownsouth Report 13 Sep 2008 21:41

Jean..... You don`t say in your posting where Harriet was born, if she was born in Bloxwich, then they obviously had only just moved to London by the 1881 census. Did they have other family members in Millwall?, they may have stayed with them initially. I see Henry was a Collier in 1874, what was his occupation in 1881? is it something that may be in a trade directory?. Also there is a quite big age gap between the 2 children, have you found any possible other siblings who may have been born and died before the 1881 census, you would need to check birth/death registerations for both areas Bloxwich.....sorry I have no idea what county that is in, and Poplar/Millwall, this may narrow down the time frame in which they could have moved.

Nicky

EDIT.... sorry ,see there have been postings while I was typing, still may be a good idea to check the births/deaths though.
