Hi Kay, Yes, they were Catholics so I think divorce was not an option. On my mum's birth certificate Archibald is down as a Rubber Worker.

In mgnv's reply there is a ref to Lancashire BMD, a site which is new to me. I visited it and MAY have found another member of the McMullen family. Someone called George and his wife Elizabeth Ann who lived where my grandad lived for a while. I don't know what the connection is yet (brother? uncle?) but I've sent for their marriage cert and I'm hoping something on it may hold a further clue. Worth a try!

Re Frances's query about "MI (Turriff #164 from ANESFHS)" - here's a bit more detail:

The d.rego is for: Christina Anderson, widow of William Anderson (Agr Labourer); died 21/7/1875 at the Hill of Ardmiddle in the parish of Turriff a=80y; d/o William Scott (Farmer, deceased) & [blank] Scott MS Rannie (deceased); cod=Old Age and Debility - Not Certified; Informant= Alexr Anderson Son Present.
(There's a Rathen OPR entry 25/12/1795: William Scott in Spillarsford had a daughter by his wife Elisabeth Rainie baptised named Elisabeth.)

The Memorial Inscription for grave #164 in Turriff old kirkyard (published by the Aberdeen & NE Scotland Family History Society) reads:
1876 Erected by ALEXANDER ANDERSON Hill of Ardmiddle in memory of his son
ALEXANDER d 20 Oct 1874 aged 21
his mother ELIZABETH SCOTT d 31 July 1875 aged 80;
his wife MARGARET WATSON d 22 Nov 1890 aged 71;
above ALEXANDER ANDERSON d 19 June 1908 aged 83

The local practice at that time was to bury wives under their MS's (i.e., Maiden Surnames)

I always try and check under an assortment of variations of the name. It's really odd, I can't find a definite record of Archibald's birth or death - if I didn't have a copy of the marriage cert I'd begin to doubt whether he ever existed!

Re the 1891 prisoner: there is a Patrick McMullen listed on the Black Sheep Index, sentenced in a Salford court in 1889 (from memory). He might be worth investigating.

Rose, the witnesses names don't give me any clues - Samuel Howarth and Gertrude Williams (Williams was the name of my Gran's second husband. Don't know if there's a connection).
mgnv, thanks for your suggestions. You say you found more info on your ggg gran on MI (Turriff #164 from ANESFHS). Can you explain what this is please?

Regarding the problem of Archie's dad's name on m.cert, I'm inclined to put it down to a brainfreeze on Archie's part.

I've been looking for my ggg gran Elizabeth's d.rego for quite a while, and it eventually turned up, but her son registered her as Christian. After getting her son's d.rego, and confirming his mother was Elizabeth, who'd been living with him for at least her last 4 years, we got further confirmation of her name and status from her MI (Turriff #164 from ANESFHS). Anyway, as I'm sure other researchers can confirm, folk do forget this sort of stuff when asked, then kick themselves afterwards.

In Archie's case, there's another possible reason - other posts say his mum died 1907 and his dad 1910, so maybe he was raised by foster parents, and William John was his foster dad.

In the 1891, there's a 22 year old Patrick Mc Mullen in Her Majesty's Prison in Preston!!!!!!!!! Wonder if there's a connection :-)

The marriage cert says William John's occupation was a dock labourer, same as Patrick!! However, on revisiting the marriage cert I've realised that it does say deceased by William John's name.
