Hi guys

I am now rethinking things.

I have noticed on the shipping record for Eliza Mason arriving in Australia, two different places of origin. One is Ambury, Shropshire and the other is Ambury, Herefordshire.

I have found on the IGI a baptism for Elizabeth Norman in 1817 in Upper Bullingham, Hereford to parents Thomas Norman and Sarah. I have then found the family in the 1841 census at Credenhill, Grimsworth, Herefordshire, sub reg Burghill.

Lissy, you mentioned an Avenbury in Herefordshire. Is that anywhere near the places mentioned in the IGI or census? Is there anywhere near Credenhill or Upper Bullingham that sounds like Ambury?

Charles and Eliza Mason named their eldest children Thomas and Sarah.

I cannot think of anywhere near Credenhill that sounds like Ambury. Avenbury is near Bromyard, about 20 miles from Gredenhill.

Just looking at the google map, as I've been researching family on the Herefordshire Shropshire borders for a while, picking out Credenhill, the closest sounding match to Ambury is Almeley which is about 10miles away. I also found a Lower Bullingham, closer to Hereford town and about 15 miles away from Almeley -which sits on the Shropshire border, of course back then, as I said b4 the borders between Hereford, Worcester and Shropshire were different to what they are today.
Have a look at Google maps uk -it's pretty useful when plotting where our ancestors lived.

Hi LD and Lissy

Thanks for all your help.

I actually have just been out and brought myself the AA Road Atlas of Britain, so hopefully I can have more luck sussing out where all these places are in relation to each other. I will also check out the Google maps UK site as well.

Wow Reg

That sounds like a real possibility. Amberley is not in my AA Atlas, but I will go back onto Google maps to find out exactly where it is. That would mean that 'my' Eliza Norman could be the Elizabeth Norman at Credenhill in the 1841 census.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Sarah,
Just a thought here, if you can give me as much detail as you can on dates and possibles for the marriage of Eliza Norman and Charles Mason, to save you the cost of ordering their marriage cert. which would give you the definate name of her father, I can look them up at Worcester history centre, I may not be able to go until early September because of school holidays, but I'll gladly look up the original marriage record for you as I'm quite a regular with the microfilms!

Lissy, that would be amazing!! Thank you so much.

I have found Charles Mason marrying Eliza Norman in the Jun Qtr, 1848 at Kidderminster, Worcestershire. K kindly found for me a record of their marriage on the IGI Pedigree for 3 May 1848 at Kidderminster, with Charles's father being William Mason.

No rush, September would be fine. Once again, thank you very much for your kind offer.

Sarah,
I've just checked through the list of records on microfilm at Worcester and there appears to be only one that would fit in with your dates --Kidderminster St Mary, all the other churches are either 'originals only' -which would be held by the church themselves or at the record office, or the marriage dates for the other churches are too late for the time we are looking at, so fingers crossed it shouldn't take too long to find if they married at St Mary
