Greetings MIKE
I'm looking for a needle in a haystack.
I have a rellie who was allegedly hit and killed by a bus in the centre of Leicester. The death is recorded in Apr-Jun Qtr 1981, if you have access to burials for that period and can narrow the gap I would be interested in any Leicester Merc report of the incident.
The person involved was Florence E Harper.
Regards

He was previously married to Charlotte Kind of Knighton , Leicester.

Also marriage of

IGI has Gt Glen 1828 but perhaps someone has parish record of this marriage??

Hope someone can help,

Greetings MIKE
Many thanks for your note re Curate William James TOMKINS.
At the moment there is no indication that he is part of my TOMKINS research, I see him on the 1841 census aged 30 but not born in the county, could not see him on subsequent census's. Having uncovered so many 'cobwebs in the cupboard' with my ancestors he would have been somewhat embarrassed as a curate !!..
Thank you for taking an interest.

Hi all - another question, this time on behalf of a fourth cousin in FLA.

William Bradbury (1846 - 1930) was born in Bedworth, Warks, but moved to Leicester with the rest of his family in the 1860s and set up a shoe manufacturing business. he obviously did OK out of it because he retired to Bournemouth.

The brand name he used was 'Scotia'. Any idea how we could get information on this.

Would there be anything at the Record Office?

Thanks

Sheila

Hello Mike...my roving reporter

Thank you for the interesting information, me thinks my shoes would have been constantly mended as I have never liked buying shoes!! Unless of course I was the Imelda Marcos of the 1760's!!!

I would like to do more research on the social history of my family, I bet the old books at the archives are fascinating! Have been reading about the history of FWK which was the profession of my Hall family. One day I shall visit Belton.........

Thank you again for all your help and the time you give

Greeting’s ……

I finally collared the top Man at the Records Office today. 21.08.08.
Non other than the “ Head of Archives”… Only the best for you. ……

Re:~ Price of shoes or should we say Boots .....c 1760…….

Blow off the dust & rummaged through several old books……..

He same up with a rough price of 3/6d. up to 7/6d.
Depending on the quality of the leather

Which equates to £20 ~ £40. in to days money.

But he pointed out that in those days people would have had their shoes mended several times before they had to buy a new pair……

With regards to the average wage in 1760……………………

“ The Jury is still out”……. on that one.

Sue Report 21 Aug 2008 09:07

Hi Mike

Thanks so much for that info. I have a couple of other possible leads I wonder if you could check some time. Both from Family Search.

Marriage of Emily Foster to James Neall 27th July 1828 St. Margaret Leicester it says Batch No M034611 1754-1837 Source call no 0596718

Christening of James Neal 24th Feb 1836 St. George Leicester parents James Neal and Emily.
Batch No C059811 1827-1836 source call no 0590955

Not sure if these are the numbers that help. Just think it seems odd they had such a long gap between Emily born 1829 and Edwin 1840. So maybe James born and died in that time.

Really hope the marriage is them. Otherwise I really do not know how I am going to get back any further.

Thanks again

Sue
