Not that I blow my own trumpet often……….

But anyone seen tonight’s “ Mr Leicester Page” in the Mercury ?

“ Stoughton Grange” was where my Grandfather was employed as
a Gardener / Gamekeeper.& Grandmother was a Cook in the Kitchens.
I’ve often wondered what the Grange looked like now I know…
very Grand !!! What beautiful neat gardens…….

Still looking for Arthur Smith, grocer, of 2 Denmark Street. Born in Leeds c1882 to William Smith and Annie (nee Bodycote) he was still around in the 1940s when he was a witness to his half brother William Goadby's Will, but no-one ever mentioned him and I don't think even my mother knew he was a great uncle...

Also Bradburys of Harrison Road (originally from Bedworth) and the Phillips family (originally from Crowland, Lincs)

can any one tell me where Occupation st was in Leicester? i have found my Husbands grand father as living there in the 1901 census but can not find it on any old maps, the name of the family was cory thanks pammy p

It runs to the West from Mere Road / Spinny Hill Road.
At the right side of H. Bones Cycle Shop opposite Green Lane Road
through to Farnham Street It was a cobbled jitty.
Houses start half way down on your left hand side

Next Street along was the famous "Charnwood Street."

As per usual it's not there today.. a nonconformist type Church stands on the site
Plus a New Public house " The Charny " stands where Charnwood Street was ....

I don't suppose Mike would know if anyone had the foresight to photograph the inmates of the Workhouse in Sparkenhoe Street about the time of the 1881 census...if they did it might be the quick way to solve a family mystery...

TUT..TUT……… That would be the easy way !!!!..

Plus I doubt if they would be allowed to photograph them
as they had not committed a crime. …
I also would think Photography was still in it’s infancy…….
and where would they get the best clothes from to do this?

I know from my relatives that Dr Banardo’s did photograph all new intakes
But this was in 1910.( and they ALL had the same set of clothes on.)

The other way would be to get out the Admission & Discharge Workhouse Books.
And hopefully get the clues from them….

Would you blame me for looking for an easy way when my lot give me so much trouble?! What I really need to do is regenerate my gran (Emma Edith Goadby 1892 - 1986) - I know for a fact she had some of the answers, I just didn't listen at the time!

I've followed your link, but wouldn't you know it - the image is from 1890 and my lady died in 1884!

I presume the Admission and Discharge Books are in the Record Office. Sounds like time for a day off and a trip over, although we are coming on Saturday to look at St Margaret's, St Mary's, the cathedral, the Newarke Houses and anything else we can fit in.

Have found some Moore's at last and was wondering if you could check if there is a will for Thomas whilst you are at the Records Office, here's his burial

I 565 F MOORE Thomas 1908 FEB 8 59 Edgehill Road Leicester 51005
I 565 F MOORE Mary Elizabeth 1909 APR 2 60 BORO' ASYLUM Leicester 51685

In 1901 they are in Grove Road. Am on a learning curve with wills and any hints how to track them down would be appreciated!

I’ll ask my solicitor friend re Will’s seeing they may be a way to tract them down without too much trouble………

I’ll have a look at the Records Office…BUT
It will have to be next week as the Records Office
They are on a 48 hrs Industrial Dispute withdrawal of labour ( Wed & Thurs) this week.
And I cannot change my other commitments.

Re Wills .....
1st. port of call would be the Probate Office in Leicester.
My friend although Probate is not his specialized subject recalls that he believes that there is a search fee of £5. to prove that a will was indeed made.
Further expenses to see what the will contained . .....
