Louise

You may have to shell ou for the birth certificate to find the answer.

Lewisham is in the London area. Maidstone is in Kent, on the coast.

For £7 you could buy the Lewisham one ........ and keep your fingers crossed.

Louise -- where did the 1893 birthdate come from?

Have you told us what his father's occupation was, in the 1917 marriage certificate?

Completely losing track here ...

Just checked the image for Alfred for the marriage (not transcribed yet) and unfortunately he had no middle initial.

Hello all,

Just to let you all know that the year of birth has now been tracked down to 1893 - there were three Alfred Skinners born in that year - 1 St. Ives - not him, 2- Lewisham - Unable to find out - 3 Maidstone -Unable to find out.
If any body out there is able to gain that information i would be most greatful but again thanks for all your help. Kind regards Louise

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 5 Jul 2008 11:27

Louise has given me the dates of the marriage and the death.

So - marriage was 10 Sep 1917 and he was 25.

Death was 19 March 1941 and he was 47.

Working on the assumption that it was his birthday the day before, and the after the above events I calculate that based on the marriage he would have been born between 11 Sep 1891 and 9 Sep 1893. Based on the date of death he would have been born between 20 Mar 1893 and 18 Mar 1895.

Assuming (dangerous I know) that ages at both events were accurate - he would have been born between 20 Mar 1893 and 9 Sep 1893.

It is possible to ask GRO to conduct a search for that period (they can search for a three year period) so maybe a search based on mid July 1893 for 18 months either side might be logical?

Hope this helps

So it's the birth for Alfred Skinner around 1892-1895, place unknown but later events are Mile End.

There eight London area birth registrations for the timeframe and a few for more far flung parts.

Wonder if anything from WW1 records might help narrow the search?

Reading back through -- am I missing something?

*Whom* did he marry in 1917??

If you know he was your great-grandfather, Louise, don't you know who your great-grandmother was?

Of course you do! You have the marriage certificate. Have you said her name somewhere here and I've missed it?

It is certainly some time between 1901 and 1917, but knowing who she was (and her father's name) might be of some help in finding him.

It appears that the one above didn't marry until 1924.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jun 2008 23:10

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate? Any chance one might have been a sibling of his? That would help find them in the 1901.

His father's name was Alfred Skinner too but i don't know his mother's name. In 1917 his father's profession was a boot clicker.

Perhaps if you could tell us his fathers name someone maybe able to check the 1901 census for you

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 29 Jun 2008 18:56

People often lied about their age on marriage certificates. It could be that he made himself look older or younger, depending on the age of his bride.

There was a 19 year age difference between my grandparents. When they married he was 42 (he said he was 39). She was 23 (she said she was 28).
Suddenly the age difference is only 11 years!!!

Annette Report 29 Jun 2008 18:43

Louise,

If you did a search on the 1901 census, he would be aged about 6 years, its more than likely he was living with his parents.

You could check his father's name (from the marriage cert) and then take it from there.

The 1901 census would give you his place of birth.

Hope that helps,
Annette
