your nan Ada remarried in 1954 so she must have divorced him before then ........... does the marriage certificate say she was divorced ?


it would be good if patchem would remove that 1957 marriage since it is too recent and it turns out the person is not related if I am following



edit ......... the 1954 marriage record gives both her surnames which usually means the bride was divorced

Thanks. I have marriage certificates for both weddings and I know that police did visit my nan regarding George and bigamy . My mum is elderly and cannot remember times and dates well but thinks it was in the late 40's which means there could be another marriage between my nan's in 1933 and the marrage in 1950! It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest!

Just a note about the original question. ;-)

If there was bigamy, and if there was a prosecution and so it came to the attention of the General Register Office, the record is notated. The GRO then *will not* issue a marriage certificate if you apply.

That's because a bigamous marriage is void "ab initio" -- from the beginning. It was never a marriage, even though it looked like one.

A marriage certificate is proof of a marriage. So a marriage certificate for a bigamous marriage would be proof of something that didn't happen!

So, if you find a marriage you suspect is bigamous, you can try applying for a certificate. If it is refused, your suspicion is confirmed. But if you get the certificate, all it means is that there was never official proof of bigamy, even if it happened.

Thanks for all your efforts but it has resulted that DUNN was a red herring!

There are a few St George's Square in London. Off the top of my head there is one in Pimlico SW1

My George is George Albert Huggett 1903-West Ham.

On both wedding certificates to my nan Ada and the other lady Elizabeth my great grandfather's name is shown Reuben James Huggett.
My nan Ada remarried in 1954 so she must have divorced him before then. It appears Elizabeth reverted back to Smith by 1952 so it looks like something happened between their marriage in 1950 and 1952. It looks like they stayed together until his death in 1957.
I will try the local papers .

which traces back to a Mother with maiden name Fowle (not necessarily name she married with), spouse born in 1936.

Going back to the 1968 death cert that you have

Huggett, mmn Fowle, is possibly the daughter for that one who married a Dunn.

I found a bigamous situation in my family tree quite by chance.The man was a master mariner sailing regularly between UK & West Indies & New York. He had a wife & 6 children in northern England but for some reason the women in his away ports gladdened the eye more - also some were wealthy widows. He went AWOL from his ship, spent a couple of years around Cuba with a wealthy widow from New York, then returned with her to New York along with a male acquaintance (named) they met who vouchsafed for my forebear which resulted in him becoming a naturalised american. They lived happily in her 5th avenue apartment for a couple of years & then they both sailed back on a foreign vessel to London.They cleared entry requirements as a married couple using her name, lived on St Georges Sq I think ( if i've read it right) married using his surname & then seemed to disappear. His legal wife & children ended up on poor relief & living with a 76 yr old aunt (in the 1841 census.)

Thanks very much for your help. A second cousin (found on here) has corroborated the wife and George's death so I now know when he died. He got a copy of the will and there is also a handwritten note which was quite poignant!

Porkiepie I have Pmd you with some details but yes 3 maiden names all on one of her 3 daughters birth certificates .......Last week we solved most of the problem of how and why,....

Last bit would involve finding a man called William williams between March 1911 and 1954 Thats all we know so if you fancy a challenge !!??

If the bigamy was dicovered then maybe she reverted back to Smith, afterall her marriage wouldn't have been legal.

Does it say "formerly" or "nee" against one of the (maiden) names? I have a certificate where the bride was married before and it reads "Mary Gibbons, formerly Craft". Craft was the name of her 1st husband.

Another way of recording the same information might have been "Mary Craft nee Gibbons" indicating that Craft was her current name but that she was actually born a Gibbons.

just a note; 3 maiden names on a birth cert?
no one has got 3 (maiden) names, you have one maiden name and any other names on the birth certs are from previous marriages, and they don't prove bigamy, just that they where married befor,
most people who commit bigamy would not admit having any other married names.

I have found out he married again in 1950! I have a copy of that wedding certificate 14-10-1950 at Chatham Registry Office to Elizabeth Emily Amy Smith aged 70 years! However it looks like she was actually born 1874 making her 76!

I don't believe the death certificate I have belongs to my grandfather. I went down the wrong alleyway with that one so am still trying to find his death certificate and/ or even Elizabeths to see if that gives me any clues!
