Find Ancestors

Amazingly, I just landed on the census page for the
Barnardo Home in Peterborough by accident, while
checking out a Rose of the right age and origin, in
the 1901 census. There are two Roses in residence,
Conlon and King, and their names are clear.

You don't happen to know the exact birthdates of the
girls, do you? They are recorded in the Cdn censuses,
so they can be used for searching/checking.

I'd say there's quite a good chance that the
Daisy Muller in 1901 was your girl:

It was common for Home Children, supposedly
emigrating for adoption, to become child workers:
girls as domestics, boys as farm labourers.
Quite amazing that these people didn't even pretend
that the 11-yr-old child in their home was a family
member.

The Hutchinson head of household was born in Canada.
There are no other Mullers in the vicinity, at least
as transcribed.

The bit not transcribed: usual place of residence of
both spouses was Buffalo, NY. Elizabeth Ann Mullard
of Buffalo was a witness. I have no idea why, but the
marriage records are full of yanks doing cross-border
marriages ... and not even same-sex ;)

By the way, wherever that info about "Peterborough, Ohio"
came from, it's just a mistranscription. I doubt there is a
Peterborough, Ohio, and Home Children were never sent
to the US from England.

Peterborough was the staging ground for a lot of
children who came as Home Children. Google

The census just says that she was born England. She's living in Durham, Ontario, Canada.
Yes, we have a Durham too, also a London and a Stratford which is on the River Avon.

Not a Canadian expert - but the way I read this, Daisy is living in Durham in Canada, not born there in England so still a chance she is yours.

(I'm in Australia and heaps of our place names are English too - which makes it confusing)

Co incidently my Mums half sister went on the Tunisian in 1909 aged 10. just before her dad a widowr married my nan

Don't understand, Val, why does it rule out Daisy? Is it because birthdate is wrong? The Canadian censuses are notorious for having wrong birth year.

1901 Canadian census has Daisy Muller, a domestic. She was born 2 Mar.1890, England and emigrated 1900. She's in Cavan, Durham East.

I may have found the details for sisters sent to Canada by Dr Banardos in 1900 but dont have Ancestry.com
The names are

there could also be a Elizabeth Muller age 15
who went out in 1893
Daisy and Rose were on the Tunisian landed at Peterborough Ohio
Elizabeth on The Labrador landed at Peterborough Ontario
somebody did say there was a marriage for a Daisy Mullard which could be mistranscribed
and a Elizabeth Muller but gave me no details would gladly do some look ups on find my past in return providing you have a idea either way of 3 years
