Val wish I'd never started Report 23 Jan 2008 13:44

I may have found the details for sisters sent to Canada by Dr Banardos in 1900 but dont have Ancestry.com
The names are
Daisy Muller age 10
Rose Muller age 12
there could also be a Elizabeth Muller age 15
who went out in 1893
Daisy and Rose were on the Tunisian landed at Peterborough Ohio
Elizabeth on The Labrador landed at Peterborough Ontario
somebody did say there was a marriage for a Daisy Mullard which could be mistranscribed
and a Elizabeth Muller but gave me no details would gladly do some look ups on find my past in return providing you have a idea either way of 3 years

oh thanks so much Sophie
and that rules out Daisy , thanks Margaret

MargaretM Report 23 Jan 2008 14:54

Don't understand, Val, why does it rule out Daisy? Is it because birthdate is wrong? The Canadian censuses are notorious for having wrong birth year.

Not a Canadian expert - but the way I read this, Daisy is living in Durham in Canada, not born there in England so still a chance she is yours.

(I'm in Australia and heaps of our place names are English too - which makes it confusing)

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 Jan 2008 23:03

The census just says that she was born England. She's living in Durham, Ontario, Canada.
Yes, we have a Durham too, also a London and a Stratford which is on the River Avon.

A bit of info about Peterborough and Barnardo's.

(But first I'm going to kill whoever put that long URL in
a post and cause the entire thread to run off the monitor.)

Peterborough was the staging ground for a lot of
children who came as Home Children. Google

Hazelbrae Peterborough

There's a Hazelbrae Memorial group that you might contact:

By the way, wherever that info about "Peterborough, Ohio"
came from, it's just a mistranscription. I doubt there is a
Peterborough, Ohio, and Home Children were never sent
to the US from England.

This is the Daisy Rose Mullard marriage:

Name: Daisy Rose Mullard
Age: 21
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889
Father Name: Peroy Mullard
(Percy Mullard, occupation baker)
Mother Name: Elizabeth A Perkins Mullard
Spouse Name: William R P Taylor
Spouse's Age: 23
Spouse Estimated Birth Year: abt 1887
Spouse Father Name: J H Taylor
Spouse Mother Name: Agnes Fisher Taylor
Marriage Date: 3 Mar 1910
Marriage Place: Welland
Marriage County: Welland
Family History Library Microfilm: MS932_150

The bit not transcribed: usual place of residence of
both spouses was Buffalo, NY. Elizabeth Ann Mullard
of Buffalo was a witness. I have no idea why, but the
marriage records are full of yanks doing cross-border
marriages ... and not even same-sex ;)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Jan 2008 01:28

I'd say there's quite a good chance that the
Daisy Muller in 1901 was your girl:

Name: Daisy Muller
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Single
Age: 11
Birth Date: 2 Mar 1890
Birthplace: England
Relation to Head of House: Domestic
Immigration Year: 1900
Racial or Tribal Origin: English
Nationality: Canadian
Religion: Church Of England
Occupation: Domestic
Province: Ontario
District: Durham (East/Est)
District Number: 55
Sub-District: Cavan
Sub-District Number: A-3
Family Number: 17
Page: 3

Thomas Hutchinson 45
Mary Hutchinson 42
Sidney C Hutchinson 15
Edna E. I. Hutchinson 11
Charles Thacker 25
Daisy Muller 11

It was common for Home Children, supposedly
emigrating for adoption, to become child workers:
girls as domestics, boys as farm labourers.
Quite amazing that these people didn't even pretend
that the 11-yr-old child in their home was a family
member.

The Hutchinson head of household was born in Canada.
There are no other Mullers in the vicinity, at least
as transcribed.

Amazingly, I just landed on the census page for the
Barnardo Home in Peterborough by accident, while
checking out a Rose of the right age and origin, in
the 1901 census. There are two Roses in residence,
Conlon and King, and their names are clear.

You don't happen to know the exact birthdates of the
girls, do you? They are recorded in the Cdn censuses,
so they can be used for searching/checking.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Jan 2008 01:49

A birth that might be of interest:

Name: Lily Muller
Date of Birth: 3 Dec 1897
Gender: Female
Birth County: York ( = Toronto)
Father's Name: Illegilimate
Mother's Name: Elizabeth Muller
Roll Number: MS929_137

Birth records are only accessible up to 1907.

Ah, unfortunately:

Name: Lilly Muller
Death Date: 30 Jan 1898
Death Location: York
Gender: Female
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1898
Birth Location: Toronto

Original says age 6 mo, address 214 Farley, Toronto, informant was unfortunately the doctor, cause of death Tabes Merienterient, I'd say.

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Jan 2008 02:17

With Elizabeth having already been an unwed mother, this person in the 1901 could be her. The record is totally slapdash, with everyone as a ditto to everyone else when it comes to place of birth and religion, for the most part.

Name: Eliza Miller
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Single
Age: 23
Birth Date: abt 1878
Birthplace: Ontario
Relation to Head of House: Charity
Racial or Tribal Origin: Eng (English)
Nationality: Canadian
Religion: Roman Catholic
Occupation: Work Of Keep [it says Work for Keep]
Province: Ontario
District: York (West/Ouest)
District Number: 131
Sub-District: Toronto (City/Cité) Ward/Quartier No. 6
Sub-District Number: G-10
Page: 17

It's quite a large institution, obviously run by nuns.

Unfortunately, there actually seem to be several pages missing before that page, so I can't identify it.

It may be that Daisy and Rose were among the fortunate ones who were taken in as adopted children, and don't show up in the censuses or marriage records (to 1934) because they have the adoptive parents' surnames. I found the same problem once before, trying to help someone find two sisters who came to Canada as home children and promptly disappeared - not in the censuses and no marriages.

It does look like Elizabeth wasn't as fortunate, but I haven't been able to find any further trace of her after the birth and death of that child, other than the possible 1901 sighting.

I'd contact the Hazelbrae people if you want to try going farther!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Jan 2008 02:23

One other thing -- if you know the girls' parents' names (I don't know what relation these girls are to you), they can be used for searching the marriage records.

Irene

Irene Report 24 Jan 2008 08:31

The marriage of the parents is on FreeBMD as taking place in Kent. Get in touch with Barnardo's at Ilford they have information on the children who were shipped out to Canada. I have a copy of the yearly report made on my grandfather's brother who was shipped out to Canada after their mother died. Good luck Irene
