Oh, wow. Thank you. This is fantastic!!!
So, Amos was a Castle/Etherington? And his mother Jane was a Balchin.
I need to go back through all your findings to work out what's what. I'm really excited about this though. It's a real breakthrough.

OK. I think I've sorted it out.
Amos was born an Etherington and his mmn was Balchin, which he switched to sometime before 1901.
Frances Emily Simmonds first married John Castle in 1892, after the births of Violet and John Thomas (illegitimate). She then meets Amos and they have a son Amos in 1901(illegitimate) but don't actually get married until 1909.
I wonder if Emily was waiting for her first husband John Castle to die? Divorce would have been too expensive back then for her.
Deb:)
Good Lord, no wonder I couldn't put this together easily.

*chuckles* A simple process of illumination.
Well done everyone - backslaps all round.
Isnt this what puts the fun in genealogy?
Have been following this thread with interest as I recently researched a tree for an old friend - and his mother's line are Balchins from Surrey too, it's not a very common name.
Have to wonder why both Amos and Levi chose to use their mother's name, huh?

Susan
Without your findings, I probably wouldn't have found what I did. Levi & Amos were two unusual names to find together.
I have enjoyed unravelling this!
