Hello Michael,
Thanks for the offer. Could you please see if there is a (Sir?) Thomas Webster Rammell. He was born 1814 and died 1889.
Are there any other Rammells mentioned?
thanks in advance,
Gillian

No Rammells in my books I'm afraid. Google turns up lots of stuff on him so I 'm a bit surprised he does not make the DNB.

Hi Michael
Would this cover posh folk in India?
I am looking for the Percy family - allegedly related to the Duke of Northumberland. My Great Aunt Kathleen O'Gorman allegedly married ??? Percy in the 30s or 40s.
Hope you may be able to help me.

The Dukes of Northumberland are all called Percy. I assume your great aunt did not marry an actual duke otherwise she would be a duchess and you would know about it. She could have married a younger son but then she would still have been a Lady and you dont suggest she was. So perhaps she married a cousin, but my book does not cover that amount of variation from the main line. Worth pursuing though - talk to old living relatives before it's too late.

It is all too late I am afraid, all I have is my dad who is 70 who is adamant but vague about it and a baptism certificate where she is down as the godmother as Kathleen Percy. Mr Percy apparantly was a VIP in the Embassy in Rangoon.
Thanks for looking anyway.

Hi Michael, I was very pleased to see that you have Burke's peerage, as I was hoping that someone on Genes would do a look up for me. Thanks very much for offering to do this. I am looking for an ancestor of my husband's, Sir Thomas Crosse of Westminster, who was born 29 Nov 1663 and was made a baronet 11 July 1713. I would very grateful if you could find any further information about him and his family. Kind regards, Penny

Hi Penny
A strange one. I cannot find any mention of Thomas Crosse in my copy of Burke, neither under extant nor extinct titles. However a google throws up several references including this one at http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=41083 "Apart from throwing light on Frith's business procedure the records of the case show that in this part of the street Frith's own tenure was by the end of 1682 dependent on a lease or leases from Thomas Crosse of Westminster, brewer (later Sir Thomas Crosse, baronet). The lease of 1684. to Pollentine was in fact made by Crosse with Frith as an associated party. (ref. 67) A Michael Cross(e) appears as ratepayer for a single site in 1679 and 1681 and a Nicholas Crosse for a single site in 1683 and 1684."
In St James, Clerkenwell there is a sculpture by Roubiliac of Thomas Crosse and his wife, 1712.
So he seems to have been a baronet and I do not know why he is not in Burke. I also tried a search at Burke's site and could not find him.

Hi Michael,
I am descended from Sir Matthew Wentworth born 1655 at Bretton, he was I believe the 3rd Baronet of Bretton. I'd love to know more about this pedigree.
Unfortunately after Matthew I am then descended from his daughter Annie Wentworth who married a Thomas Hassell @ 1710 (he was only an Esquire so I don't suppose there will be anything on this line)
Then 3 generations after this I'm down to "labourers" and "paupers"!!
Thanks
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl
I cannot find this baronetcy in my copy of Burke. I dont know why. You can find his pedigree here: http://www.thepeerage.com/p17797.htm#i177970 but I cannot vouch for the accuracy.

Hi Michael,
That's a shame that it isn't mentioned. I will certainly take a look at the website you suggest.
Thanks very much.

Dear Michael,
Could you look these names up for me please.
Vicount Hambledon, (Col), Marquis OS Exeter, (Col), Marquis of Northampton, (Capt), Lord W Cecil, (Col), (X) Hon John Cecil Lord J Joicey Cecil, Hon Frank Joicey Cecil, (Lt?),
I am looking at names on a WW1 memorial at St. Clement Danes Church in London and these are some of the names listed.
Some of the names listed have an asterix (X) next to their name. I don't know who did/did not survive. I am trying to ascertain whether those who have an asterix (or no asterix) next to their name survived.
Sorry to be long winded, but thought I would at least try!
Thanks in advance,
Marcus

There is no Hambledon (with an o), but there is William Frederick Danvers 2nd Viscount Hambleden DL co. Devon, BA Oxford, MP for Strand Div of Westminster 1891-1910, hon Col. 96th (Devon Yeo) Bde, RFA (TA) and hon Col. 43rd (Wessex) Divl. Train. RASC (TA), Lt-Col TF Res, formerly Lt-Col Royal 1st Devon Yeo, Chm of Kings Coll Hosp, Treasurer of Kings Coll London, K.G.St.J, b 12/8/1868, m 26/7/1894 Lady Esther Georgina Caroline Gore, D.G.St.J 3rd dau of 5th Earl of Arran d 16/6/1928.
The Marquess of Exeter survived the war.
The Marquess of Northampton survived but was wounded.
The other Cecils are I assume members of the family of the Marquess of Exeter.
Lord W Cecil is probably the one who died 1943 aged 89.
John Francis James Joicey-Cecil a Lt in the Gren. Guards b 18/9/1897, kia 25/9/1916.
It certainly looks as if the * means killed in action.

I cannot find anything to link to Waystrode Manor in Cowden. There is a Baronet Style of Wateringbury about 20 miles NE. Your family might be related somehow but it would take a lot of work to compare the two.
