In 1871

Edward Furniss is Head..Catherine is his wife.

They have four children

James Hampson 23, is brother in Law to Edward
Mary Hampson aged 21 is Sister (in Law)

Ada, age 1 is his niece

All except Edward give their birthplace as Manchester

James and Mary are recorded as both being unmarried

Thanks Ozibird.

That looks like my Ada and if that is her father James and Mary is his wife he must have been a bigamist assuming they did actually get married. What a devil.

I didn't notice the unmarried bit Reggie.

In that case is it a mistake or are they step-siblings of Edward?

Jane, is 1 year old Ada the ancestor you are following?

Ozi.

This is getting confusing, Reggie.

ErikaH Report 22 Oct 2007 21:01

MMMMmmmmmmmmm

Mary Furniss 1868 Apr-May-Jun Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire
James Hampson 1868 Apr-May-Jun Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire

The cert would give father's details, and confirm whether James was a bigamist.........or a different James!

Jane, how certain are you that Ada's mother is Louisa Birch?

It certainly is, Ozi..........I was confused earlier, let alone now.....

The thread about 'too young' was nonsense........so I deleted it!!

I think we're going down the wrong track here. How do you know he lied about his occupation?

It is quite possible he could be a solicitor AND a stock broker.

Ozibird

My Ada was about 1 on the census. She was born about 1869.

And your right it is getting vvery confusing. NOt sure what to make of it all. All I know for sure is that Ada's parents were Louisa Birch and James Hampson. James and Louisa married in June 1866. And I know James was a lier and kept on disapearing and know one knows why.

Thank you both so much for spending all this time trying to help me. It is much appriciated.

I'm afraid I have to go now but I will check this thread inthe morning.

Thanks again

Jane

You say you are certain about Ada's parents...........yet you only have 'about' 1869 for her birth..........If you don't have the birth cert, how is there such certainty about her parentage?

Not doubting you.......just looking for clarification.............

Reggie, we need to know who Ada married so we can work backwards. I guess we'll have to wait until Jane returns.

Jane, I'll check this thread tomorrow to see if you've put Ada's marriage on here.

Ozibird.

Thanks for all your help. Ada married Charles Chorley in 1893 in Lincolnshire. (I have this cert)

That census you have given me is very interesting. When Charles and Ada met he was working in Chorlton Union Workhouse (1891-1893). Ada's records show her as a probationery nurse. He was working as an Insane Attendent and Labour master. So it is very likey that the Ada in the 1881 census is mine. This also means both parents may dead or abandoned her.

Ada's records show her year of birth.

I think what I am going to do is order some certificates and see what happens. Most of the information I have was given to me by someone who knows the family. Something is not quite right. I could be going down the wrong road here.

HI

I have just checked the 1881 census for bother James and louisa Hampson and they are both missing ?dead. Which makes me think the Ada in the Workhouse in 1881 is mine.

Whatever Ada was doing in the workhouse I don't know. She did work in the workhouse with.her husband much later. I am wondering if when the marriage broke up father took Ada and mother kept Thomas.Louisas dad was well off and Thomas went to a posh school.
