Thankyou for your offer of help with Arthur but I am fine with him. Worthing was the the place that my father met Dorothea when contact resumed again.

Arthur met Dorothea when he was working in London.He came from Worthing.So after the marriage Dorothea moved into Arthurs home and from what I can understand Arthurs son from a previous marriage took an instant dislike to Dorothea.He didnt agree with the marriage.His father was 74 and Dorothea 62

The death certificate I had was for Dorothea and not Arther.but I do know that Arthur was cremated in worthing and Dorothea had requested that when she died she wanted to be with Arthur in Worthing.

I have also spent alot of time this morning searching for Edwin over in this country after May 1912 as this is when he was discharged from the Army.But I have still come across nothing for him.Its as if he vanished.

I have just managed to acsess find my past. I searched all military births and marriages for Edwin,Dorothea and Constance and found no records at all.Stange ,Strange ,Strange!!

I really dont know where to go from here.To complete my fathers tree all I want to know is where Edwin/Edward died and who my fathers grandmother was.

Im off to search some more.

Many thanks to Ann and all of you kind people that have taken the time and trouble to assist Dionne in unravelling the complicated story surrounding my husband's roots. This is becoming better than any Catherine Cookson novel. With all your advice we have now secured several certificates etc, the contents as some of you will know having followed this story showing huge descrepancies in the few things my husband was told by his mother. The South African part is intrigueing and hopefully in time we will be able to finally have a beginning to this story.

I've also looked for Edwin/Edwards death, in England, but haven't found it yet. Also while I was at Kew today, I had a look at the register of pensions which started in 1912. It's in date order,so I looked a few weeks either side of the date he was discharged, and he wasn't there. So I'm wondering if he was discharged due to some sort of disability, but don't think there's a register for those as late as 1912. Don't worry that you didn't find the births or marriage in the Army registers - it's very common for them not to be there - I know because I've looked for loads of them!

What I meant to say was that the register I looked at was for those discharged to pensions due to length of service.

Thankyou so much again.

I was talking to my husband who is ex service (Navy). He was only saying earlier that he thinks Edwin was discharged on medical grounds.if this was the case because of the length of service he thinks Edwin might not have received a pension. This might also fit in with Edwin dieing at a young age as well.

On a more positive note I have found a tree match on Genes for Edwins Father and Grandfather. I have emailed the tree owner.Fingers crossed she might be able to give me some further details.

I am still so confused as to why we cant find a death for Edwin.We know he came back to England.So where did he die,lol. I believe that Dorothea is looking down on me and have a very good laugh,lol

I think he must have received a pension. His length of service would have merited a pension, and his service record wouldn't have been kept if he hadn't received one.

Great tohear that you've found someone connected to the family! Hope they can shed some light on the mystery!

I think, although obviously have no proof, that he died very shortly after he left the Army, or he was still alive when his daughter got married!

I to think he died at a young age.I have always had that feeling.Both Daughters had him down as deceased on their marriage certificates.Not forgetting Dorothea was only 21 when she married. but where did he die?lol. I am still looking.

I have pm'd you reference your question yesterday, unfortunately not able to help.

However I have just logged on to scotlandspeople and did a search on e livermore 1900-1956 and there is one match. I do not have any credits left, so not able to view the record, but it costs 6 quid for a few searches. Or there may be someone on here who has credits who could look for you. Fingers crossed this helps you.

Dionne, what is the possibility that he went straight back to Africa as soon as he was discharged? And maybe it was the mother of the children that brought them back here once he had died...?

I searched on deaths e livermore think I have narrowed it down to 1913!!

Be good if you could have a look for Dionne.

Wayne, we should have found him in the overseas deaths if he'd gone back to South Africa. I looked at the consular as well as the regimental BMDs.

esp if he didn't go back as military... he probably went back as a civilian... which means his death will only be recorded there...
