Hi One of my partner's relatives was an SC (does this mean Special Constable) in London. The only info we have for him is taken from the Metropolitan Police Book of Honour: 1915 SC Thomas Joseph Pinchon Killed by a bomb explosion at Holborn while reporting for duty during an enemy air raid. Would you mind looking to see if he had a Warrant Number? If he does, we might get more information about his family by going to the Record Office. Thank you. Su

Linda Sorry, not there. You can still get his service record by finding his warrant number but both of these things involve visiting Kew. nell

Barry Sorry, no John Drury. I think Acton is outside the Met Police area (or would have been pre 1900 anyway). The fact that your relie hadn't retired makes me suspicious as most Met police retired in their 40s/50s. I know Horn Lane slightly as I went to college in Acton - it was part of Ealing then and now the Thames Valley Uni. It's quite likely accommodation was provided. I know one of my Met police uncles is in a police section house with other recruits from the same village in the 1901 census. I suggest you contact the relevant records office to see if they hold any info of use to you. nell

Janice I am merely checking names against the police-orders database, which is by no means complete. It provides the warrant number which you can use to check records at Kew. If your relative transferred to another force, I think it will be on his service record at Kew. nell

Nell - Thank you for checking Charles Gosling. Do the records relate to those who retired in the Met Police which would then tell me that Charles Gosling must have transferred to another police force after the 1901 census was taken? Jan

My husbands gt gt grandad was a police officer in the Manchester police so we phoned up the Manchester Police Museum with vaue details and the very nice chappy there gave us his service record information over the telephone, a few weeks later we then visited the museum too. We thought husbands family were as English as they come but from the service records found out that they are as Irish as they come!! Have fun hunting Helen

Hi Could you please see if you can find anything on John Bawden for me, he joined the police force sometime between 1845 and 1851, lived at Nelsons Grove, Nelsons Fields Merton, Surrey. At the time of the 1861 census he was age 37. He retired prior to the 1881 census. Sorry I cant be more specific as I dont have access to any information as I am in Australia. Regards Christina
