Thanks for your help! I'll give them a call first then. It's for a friend's tree which is full of Irish people so I don't know how to help him really, but this could help us to at least find out a bit more. Thanks :)

Elizabeth Nothing for Robert, I'm afraid. You can still find his warrant number but it means going to Kew. That's if he was in the Met (which seems likely as he was living in chelsea). He might have been working for the City of London police. Their records are: The City of London Police: Registers listing every member of the force since warrant numbers were introduced on 9 April 1832 together with personal files on 95% of officers who have served since that date have been transferred from the City of London Police Records Office to the Corporation of London Record Office, PO Box 270, Guildhall, London, EC2P 2EJ (Tel: 020 7332 1251) They were very helpful when I contacted them about a relative and sent me details of his service. nell

Hi Nell, If you are still doing these look ups could you look for someone for me? His name was Robert STEWART and the 1881 census lists him as a police constable living in Chelsea. He was born about 1827 and the family seem to have arrived in London from Ireland about 1860. Thanks for anything you can find. Liz

I don't know if this period is covered, but I'd be interested if you could find my dad, Harold Ernest Hickin who would have joined somewhere between 1937 and 1940 Much appreciated

Glen If your relative was in Manchester, he won't be in the Metropolitan Police. The Met covered London as well as various dockyards. nell

William No Jack, but there is a John. Think this one might be too early for you: Date Warrant First name Last name Rank Number Station Reason PO Date 05/11/1906 93938 JOHN LOADER PC 838 Y JOINED PC 363 C JOINED 14/09/1912 93938 JOHN LOADER PC Y GRATUITY 11/09/1912 C = Soho area Y = Kentish Town. and here's Lewis: 28/01/1893 76406 LEWIS LOADER PC 458 N To 459 A 30/01/1893 29/04/1899 76406 LEWIS LOADER PC 459 A To 91ar 24/04/1899 31/08/1901 76406 LEWIS LOADER PC 91ar A To PS 29 T 02/09/1901 16/03/1907 76406 LEWIS LOADER PS 29 TA To 5tr T 11/03/1907 08/09/1919 76406 LEWIS LOADER PS 5tr T PENSIONED 07/09/1919 N = Stoke Newington A = Westminster TA = Thames T = Hammersmith The r after a number means that the officer was a reserve. PC = police constable and PS = police sergeant. As Lewis was pensioned in addition to his recruitment entry, you can find his pension details at Kew. These will tell you how much pay he was on when he retired, including allowances for children, wife's name, address at time of retirement plus forwarding address for his pension, as well as the amount of his pension. It might also add more detail to his service record. nell

Hello Helen L N Please, can you look for JACK LOADER I firmly believe he was a Sgt in the Metro Police sometime around 1920. The family used to live in Shepherds Bush. Also his father (I think he was his father) LEWIS LOADER was a Police Constable in London. I found him in the 1901 census with his wife Emily Charlotte. I think they lived in Islington Lon. Many thanks for your help. Bill

Police-ordershas an index of many Metropolitan policemen, though it is not comprehensive. You can search on it by surname or warrant number here: http://www.externalserver.me.uk:8085/ Info may include when they joined, were promoted, got a pay increase, or moved to another division, whether they resigned or retired etc. It will also have their warrant number. You can use this at Kew to look in the record books. These give details such as weight, height, eye & hair colour, where they joined up, next of kin etc. For more info, read the Nat Archives website on the Met: www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104 nell
