Hello Helen, I wonder if it would be possible to find my ancestor James Kirk b. Upton C1827. On the 1881 census, he is listed as receiving a police pension, so presumably he is retired. I think he would have been serving in Westiminster. Thanks in advance Fiona |

Christine Alfred Vargerson appears to have joined, resigned and then joined again! There's also a Richard Vargerson - I've given his details in case he is a relative. Date Warrant First name Last name Rank Number Station Reason PO Date 24/02/1890 75314 ALFRED VARGERSON PC 615 P JOINED 31/08/1891 75314 VARGERSON PC 615 P RESIGNED 30/08/1891 12/08/1895 80653 ALFRED VARGERSON PC 589 P JOINED 23/02/1920 80653 VARGERSON PC 418 P PENSIONED 22/02/1920 07/07/1890 75962 RICHARD VARGERSON PC 493 R JOINED 31/10/1896 75962 VARGERSON PC R GRATUITY 28/10/1896 P = Peckham R = Blackheath Road If you can get to Kew you can use the warrant number to look in the book which has details of when they joined, including description, birthplace, etc. The date of Alfred Vargerson's pension can help you find him in the Pensions Books at Kew - these give a final salary, pension payable and an address where the pension is to be sent, as well as the current address of the policeman and his next of kin. Sometimes it gives details about children too. nell |
