I find it unbelievable that people do this. I have been so humbled by the generosity of people on this site when I've hit problems and the helpfulness and patience in my first weeks when I was finding my feet and working out where to locate information. Can you report them to someone? |

As someone who has had several look-ups done for me, may I please reinforce your message and ask people NOT to do it. I would like to remind them of how generously you all give of your time and that you go to a lot of trouble to help those of us who do not have access to Ancestry. May I also point out to them that until relatively recently, (pre home pcs and the internet) tracing your roots involved traipsing round record offices and libraries, gleaning what you could, where you could - often you had to wait months to find out one new snippet of information. Those days have gone, to some extent, but that does not give us the right to expect an instant answer, especially when you are asking someone else to do the wotk for you. Our ancestors are long gone, so waiting a few hours for a reply is hardly a matter of pressing urgency. I am also disconcerted by the number of people who post a request and then clear off from the boards, presumably hoping that when they come back the next day, their tree will have been done for them, by someone else. At best, it is thoughtless - others may consider it discourteous or even plain selfish. So come on, play the game - have a little patience, the people doing look ups have a life of their own and are not there to solve all our queries. Jay |

I appreciate that you all have a legitimate 'gripe' and I certainly don't want to excuse those who abuse your generosity. I now subscribe to Ancestry and 1837 and have found numerous free genealogy sources and still occasionally fall back on this site when I am stumped. However, I still remember a time when I was new to both genealogy and computers and relied almost completely on genes-re. It would have been a great help if someone had told me where-else I could find information. So, to help any newbies, just google 'genealogy' (it will come up with about 30,000 sites!) or, to make things easier, google the particular county you are interested in, ie.: 'Lancashire genealogy' or even the surname you want, eg: 'Smith family genealogy.' Good hunting, but take note of the comments on this thread. I, particularly, don't want to lose any of these good people. Diane |
