Hi Kate The medal roll is a learning curve for me: I had not looked at it before. I misread the reference and ordered the wrong volume. The correct reference is: WO329/2485. However, if the volume I looked at is anything to go by, I think I can see the problem that your researcher experienced. I checked two other medal rolls and in those cases the reference from the medal card takes you straight to the roll. The roll appears to be compiled of lots of returns, all bound together. In the case of the Army Service Corps, there is no page numbering that runs throughout the volume. The finding aids do not indicate any key and it looks as if one would have to work through the volume (which is as fat as a dictionary), looking at every page. The problem is compounded by the fact that a few of the returns do not list the men in alphabetical order. Have you tried Googling the reason given on the medal card? It looks like a standard reason, presumably wrongly applied. Sorry to have to admit failure!

Hi, Thanks for trying, anyway. I don't think the researcher would have had the same problem as he was supposedly an expert, but I think he was just confused by the fact that he hadn't taken notes of (or printed off) any of the information I had given him and just went by the name of the person! Anyway, I have tried googling the reason given on the card, but unfortunately, because it is 'article' something (and the number of the article isn't very clear anyway), all I get is articles about the first world war, rather than whatever articles governed the forfeiting of medals! I have tried posting the medal card up on the 1914-18 forum a couple of times but got very little help there. I don't really want to go into details on here but Reginald's personal life during the war was rather busy(!) and I wonder whether the forfeiting of the medal (and its reinstatement) would be connected in any way with everything that he was up to. Anyway, as I said, thanks for trying. Maybe one day they will put all the rest of the WW1 stuff online and make it easier for us... Hope you get your internet access back soon. Happy new year, Kate.

hello eb my dad told my mum he was in the australian army for 15yrs he was offered apension than it was 6pence aweek he told them to stuff it,anyway after he died in 1954 my mother got in touch with australia house and they said they couldnt find his records that was 1914,so as im his daughter and only child how would i go about finding out,but what puzzles me is why the australian army when he was born in london,hope you can shed some light on this mistery and thank you even if you find nothing.joyce from holland

Joyce Your grandfather baffles me. He shows on the CWGC site, but there is no recorded medal card for him, which I assume there should have been. Kew blocks access to several sites now and I did not have the time to check, but might he also have been recorded on a commonwealth website, say Australia. Time ran out, but I can check WO 363 for a service record on a later visit.

Netti I had a look at the medal roll. WO 329/1517 The only extra info it gives is that the medals were authorised at Winominster on 6.2.1920 and Thomas was originally in the 2nd KRRIF.C and at some stage transferred to the 1ST KRRIF.C If you would like me to look for his service record, let me know.

Irene I'm sorry, but time was very tight, so I had no time to work out which records to look at. If you go to the National Archives website and find the research guide on soldiers, that should tell you which particular records (paylists, musters, discharge papers etc) are the most useful.

Diana I could not find Henry William Pearce's service record in wo 363. This doesn't necessarily mean that it is lost. Let me know if you would like me to look in WO 364. Some records were misfiled and they are gradually turning up as volunteers find them, so there are seveal places to look.

Alan James Nightingale was aged 30 a labourer when he signed up in 24.8.1914. He had previously been discharged from the 3rd Batt Essex by purchase 7.4.1902. The references run from W0 363 N287 image 323 -355. There is masses of info: children with dates of birth, wife's address, James' physical description. Will add later.

Hello, If you are going to Kew again is there a chance you could look up my Grandfather, George Watson, Private Liverpool R. 6641 then transfered to Royal Welsh Fuserliers 46939. Have copy of medel card but hard to read roll no's would love to know more about him where he came fron ect,.thank you Lillian
