Find Ancestors

Can anyone find my great grandfather Henry Quarrell on the 1901 Census. He was born c1881 in Birlingham, Worcestershire but moved sometime after 1891 to Sheffield/Leeds as he married my great grandmother in 1907 in Sheffield. I can't seem to find him after the 1881 Census. Many thanks Helen

Hi Louise, Thank you, I did in fact find him on the 1881 census, but lost track of him after that. Can't find any record of him on the 1891 or 1901 Census.

Could Henry have been in the army? Lots of young men his age were in the Boer War and so abroad in 1901. Kath. x

Hi Louise, Yes I think that must be him on the 1891 census, mistranscribed as Harry. Its the same parents and siblings so I would definately say so. Thank you

Harry isn't a mistranscription - it's a well known pet name for Henry - (like Prince Harry). Kath. x

In 1901 his sister Ada is a niece in the household of Henry & Catherine Wood in Whittington, Worcs. Henry Wood is a railway labourer. Ada is 11, born Birlingham.

Hi Kath, I don't think that is his birth though. On his marriage certificate it gives his age as 25, he married in 1907, so that would make his birth year about 1881/1882. Thanks anyway

I wouldn't take ages on marriage certificates as gospel. Lots of my certificates have ages out by up to 5 years. People lied for all sorts of reasons - to appear younger/older depending on the age of the person they were marrying. Kath. x
