I need to find a Baptism for a Frederick Brown/Browne born January 1880 in Nottingham, his mother was Phoebe Brown/Browne, I think he was illegitimate so there will more than likely be no father, if anyone can help I would most appreciate it.

Would it not be easier to trace the birth ref rather then the baptism?

I have tried but his birth is not registered

Thanks for looking. I found Frederick on the 1891 Census with his mother Phoebe she was at the time married to a Henry Taylor (Frederick took the name Taylor even though Henry was not the father) Phoebe and Henry married in 1889. I have hopefully found the birth of Phoebe Brown and have sent for the Certificate today. She is a mystery as well, she was born 1854 in Nottingham her father was Charles Browne (occ Mechanic) but so far I cannot find her on the 1861 71 or 81 Census. Phoebe had died before the 1901 Census.

Hi, was just wondering... did he marry ? Could you send for his wedding cert... and see who [ if anyone] he put down as his father. Sue.

Sorry can you post it as I can't find it!

He put Henry Taylor as his father which I know now was not his birth father he just took the name Taylor when his mother Phoebe Brown married in 1889. I know I wont be able to follow the male line but I was hoping to find out about his mother Phoebe but so far no luck. Hopefully her birth Certificate will be the right one.

But where are they in the 1891 census?

If you can't find either the baptism or the birth registration, then how do you know that Henry Taylor isn't his father? Maybe he IS the father but as they weren't married at the time he tok his mothers surname. Sam x

I have looked for births for Frederick Taylor 1880 in Nottingham just in case as well as Frederick Brown but nothing on either. I would not think Henry taylor would wait 9 years to marry Phoebe if he was Fredericks father. In 1891 the Census reads Henry James Taylor age 47 born in Worcester, Worcestshire Phoebe Brown Taylor age 36 born in Nottingham Frederick Taylor age 11 born in Nottingham They were living in Gainsborough, Worcester Pheobe & Henry married in Nottingham in 1889

Tracy, As far as I can tell there is something very wrong with the 1881 census on ancestry so no wonder you can't find them. I am not really sure what is going maybe see how things are in a couple of days.

Have you got the marriage cert for Henry & Phoebe? In 1891, they were in Lincs......not Worcs. Reg

Sorry Tracy but I must be missing something here - how do you know he was born in January 1880, please? Kate.

Reg - Sorry I meant Lincolnshire, I was looking for someone just before and got mixed up. As for how I no when he was born, Frederick Taylor is my mother in laws Grandfather and all she knew of him was that he was a 1st class petty officer in the royal navy and that he came from Nottingham. I managed to locate the Navy records which has him as being born 1st january 1880 in Nottingham, it also ties up with the age he was when he married. I then discovered he was not really a Taylor as his mother did not marry until 1889 to a Henry Taylor so Frederick took his name from then on. He put his father down on the marriage as Henry, do not know if he ever knew he was not his father. Tracy

Reg, Yes I had the Marriage Certificate of Phoebe and Henry arrive today, I was hoping as Phoebe was abt 26 when she had Frederick she may have married before but she was a spinster, her father was Charles Browne and they married July 27th 1889 in the Parish of St Saviours, Nottingham.
