Denis Report 23 Apr 2006 09:30

Greenock and Liverpool were two leading sugar centres. Apparently a there was such a thing as a 'sugar labourer' so perhaps that what he started out as and worked his way up. Greenock and Liverpool both drew much of their labour from Ireland. Interesting that at that time if you wanted to go from Glasgow to London you took a train to Greenock, boat to Liverpool then another train. Keith, all you might ever want to know about sugar in Greenock can be found at: http://home*clara*net/mawer/greenock*html Christine,I'll keep you on the Christmas card list - I'm a Caley Thistle season ticket holder! Mmm! So did Caley! Remember them! Not a glorious game but 3 points nonetheless! Guess i'm off the Christmas card list, Denis! But the serious business, of course Greenock/Tate & Lyle - I hadn't thought of that, he could well have worked there, and he is down as a Sugar Broker so could mean he bought and sold sugar. Keith, Sugar refineries in Liverpool? You any ideas? I'm not around tomorrow till late afternoon but will look to see if you come up with anything

Denis

Denis Report 23 Apr 2006 00:00

Re the earlier point made by Christine on the sugar related occupation, Greenock was a great sugar town, 12 sugar refineries at one point including Lyles (later Tate and). Lots of links with Liverpool too. Could add up. He might have been a labourer in one of these? Yes, great result for Hibs today. Denis.

Result's still the same, Keith. They did win - it's true!
