sorry - i forgot to add message that I'd traced Yvonne back to confirm who her parents were (it was my turn to make tea so I had to go) so apologies to all who did the search as well - but I can confirm that I also matched her to a mother called Doris Nicholls through the birth index and then the marriage Zoe |

Just to let people know that I've looked up to and including 1946 for anymore children with surname Gates, mothers maiden name Nicholls. Found nothing. Didn't want anybody checking same years. |

Going off what Zoe found how about this Yvonne G Gates (mothers maiden name Nicholls) - Redruth 1940 Q1 5c 574 then found this marriage George W Gates - Doris W Nicholls- Redruth - 1939 Q3 - 5c 543 Not too good on geography but hoping Redruth is in Cornwall. |

I was getting all confused here so I drew it out in a tree to make sense of it. Olive Gates and Michael Allen marrying in Islington in 1970 seem a little too far after the birth (and geographocally too) to be the correct parents for the Mark Allen born 1964 in Penzance. The Olive E Gates birth is DEFINITELY not the right one if her mothers maiden name is Bainborough and the matching marriage is to a THOMAS Gates and not the George being searched for. It would probably be best to concentrate on trying to find parents for the Mark Allen born in 1964 - either by getting his birth certificate or by finding matches in the indexes - this gives Carol another two names of possible living relatives to loook for in teh search for Mark. I have some free time now so I'll see if I can go back and find a possible marriage Zoe |

You need to get Mark's birth certificate & Olives marriage certificate (which will give the name of her father) to see if they link up. Here is possibly Olive's birth reference - 1st quarter 1947 - Olive E Gates Islington 5c 2132 (mother's maiden name Bainborough) Gillian |

What an extrodinary and sad story. Have you tried finding a 1992 newspaper for Truro. It might give obituaries with more family details. The local library might have an electoral roll for 1992. Alternatively why not write up the story and send it to the local Truro paper and see if any readers remember George. |

Hello Carol, bit of a long shot but have you looked on b4usearch website? I have found 1 Mark and 2 M Allen's living in Redruth. Would you like me to PM the info to you? Also I suppose you are looking for a birth of Mark Allen with the mother's maiden name of Gates. Maybe someone could trawl ancestry (I'dont have it). Best of luck, Selena |

Carol this is a fairly roundabout way to search - but it may bear fruit. If he owned property when he died he may have left a will or his family would have had to apply for probate in order to administer his estate - you should be able to search for copies of these - which could leave clues as to other members of his immediate family if they are named as beneficiaries. If you have an address on the death certificate it is worth writing to them and breifly explaining the tale and asking if they still have any details of the solicitors that dealt with the house when they bought it. if it was sold as part of probate then the solicitors will have details of where/who the money went to. A search of the 1992 electoral role for the address you have for him may shed light on whether he left a widow or if anyone else was living with him at the time. Failing that - have you written to the local newspaper to his address in hope that someone who knew him would be able to provide any other snippets of information abuot his family? Zoe |
