Hi Debbie... my mums maiden name is O'Reilly. We were all lead to beleive they always were.... which made my searching really diffecult.. until I discovered that although my Garndad was born O'reilly, his 7 older siblings were actually born Reilly... the name changed from Reilly to O'Reilly abt 1910...... Where as I have Hanlen in the family also. Which also in the early 1900's changed from O'Hanlen to Hanlen. so 1 added an 'O', the other lost the 'O'!! It's very strange sui |

Just to add, O'Donnell and Gallagher are popular names in County Mayo. Could be useless info but could be a start too. Good Luck. Mark |

Georgina Thanks will try that as i have been told scotlandspeople refund crediots lost due to mistranscriptions. Yes her paents were recorded as James O'Donnell and Ellen O'Donnell, nee Gallacher. Informant was Mary Jane husband Patrick O'Hagan Debbie |

Debbie I am glad you found her death certificate, we got slightly side tracked last night. Was her parents names on it? On the home page at scotlands people scroll down to the bottom and it says contact us, click on it and just keep following the directions. Georgina. |

I ended up purchasing more credits for Scotlands people, and eventually found Mary Jane death record by searching for her maiden name O'Donnell. I found one in Glasgow which on the index had other name stated as Hagan, and i thought yes well maybe. It was her but her name is very easy to read and clearly says O'Hagan, so someone has wrongly transcribed her surname and cost me credits. Now how do i contact Scotlandspeople to report this mistranscription ? Debbie |

Betty, I have death certificates from 1902, 1937, 1966 and 1988 and they all have the parents names on them. The 1902 and 1937 people were born in Ireland. I think it may be the case of the informant not knowing the information required, rather than ''were they born in Scotland? no? then they don't get named''. |

Debbie that census info I posted is the 1881 in scotland, I have it on discs if you ever need a look-up. Because Patrick was much older than his wife maybe she remarried after he died? Georgina. |

Betty I have just looked at scotlands people & it says on there... Deaths ...what info you can expect to find on Death Certs The following table indicates when particular details were introduced to and/or removed from statutory death registration. Please note that only images of statutory deaths from 1855 to 1955 are presently available to view on this site. Deceased: name, sex & marital status 1855 to date Deceased: date of birth 1966 to date Deceased: place of birth 1855 only Deceased: rank, profession or occupation 1855 to date Deceased: how long in the District? 1855 only Deceased: date, time & place of death 1855 to date Deceased: age at death 1855 to date Deceased: causes of death 1855 to date Deceased: duration of disease 1855 - 1964 Parents: name & rank, profession or occupation 1855 to date Parents: alive or deceased? 1855 to date Spouse: name 1855, sometimes 1856 - 60, then 1861 to date Children: names & ages at date of death certificate or age and year of death if child pre-deceased parent 1855 only Doctor: name of doctor certifying death 1855 to date Doctor: when last saw deceased alive 1855 - 1860 Burial place & name of undertaker 1855 - 1860 Informant: qualification & signature 1855 to date Informant: residence 1855 - 1965, then 1972 to date Registrar: date & place of registration, signature 1855 to date Maybe as you say if the parents were not born in Scotland their info was not added. Maybe they changed the way deaths are recorded in later years. Debbie sorry I know this dosen't help your search. Georgina. |

Hi Betty No wonder you are having such a hard time finding ancestors, if your certs are missing information. I dont mean to be rude but it is the full records and not just the indexes you have ? Debbie |
