My subscription to Ancestry just ran out but I did find Charles at some kind of ship training school I think. The age was a little off but not too much.

Some of the records you have uncovered seem very promising and I shall now Try for a birth certificate with the fathers name as John or Jack born Wallsend however still puzzled by the Army records.
Katie discovered a record I have not seen and this may well be his first sevice record . After seeing the 1911 census I concentrated on the Wallsend area again and also found the record of Susannah and John's family and could not find either parent in 1901 so they both must have died as I found one of the twins living with his granny and the next year 1911 both twins living with granny however could not find Charles.
Years ago I remember seeing a record of a charles about the right age in a training school and discarded this as I had not seen his wedding certificate which stated his father was deceased. I have not come across this record since although I have looked for it. It is possible that some trust took over Charles Education and he may have been groomed for the army???. He was quite young when he enlisted and the boys sometimes lied about their age however at 15 yrs 7 mths is plain for Katie to see. also RobG has found the same confusion with the age of Charles in the army records. I wonder if they have got two Charles Thompsons mixed up
That has held me back although I did enter on my tree the John Born Aspatria because the names in that tree are names commonly used in my thompson tree however with the feeling that it was not the correct one.
When I saw all the answers and help you have given me I nearly did decided to wait another 4and half years to reply only I decided I had better reply as I may not have 4 and half years left as I am 73 this year and also jansmith reminded me of how to get to the messages. Thanks Jan

His twin brothers James and Leonard are at 49 Backchrist street in 1901, so Katie has the correct record.

The records were on FMP. This Charles was only in the Army for 2 years and didn't go to India but he may have re-enlisted of course. Amazingly he was only 4ft 9ins tall! No other pension records seem to match up but they only go up to 1913.

There is a Leonard(same one as in 1891 census?) living with grandmother in 1901 that could be in the same street as above if someone could check it on the 1901 image please

Hi Rob, i sent Elsie a pm last night but it hasn't been opened yet! hope its not another 4 yrs before she finds this thread again!
It is certainly a puzzle as to why he hasn't put wife as nok as it ties in with cwgc that she is his wife.

Just to add, in re-reading this thread, I see that Jan found them in the1911 census, living in the Walker area of Newcastle. This is where the Charles detailed above says his father is living as his NoK in 1914.

Yes, it does show a promotion, so it is possible that after his discharge (for a gunshot wound to the back), he recovered and returned to service.

HOWEVER, there are other things on there that are making me uneasy.

The pages that show up are for his WW1 Attestation Papers, completed on 28th Aug 1914.
He gave his father as NoK, but according to the details in the original post, he was already married by then, so why not his wife.?
On the front page, when asked if he had previous service, he answers no, whereas OP said (also mentioned by CWGC) that he had previously served in India.
The age given at this date was 29 years and 4 months, yet just under two years later when he died, the CWGC site says he was only 26.
This new age would give him a birth date of approx April 1885, quite different from previous.
And finally, he gives his place of birth as Whitehaven in Cumberland, rather than in the Newcastle area.

YET this man has the same name, regiment and regimental number as the man required.
Hmmmm!!! To paraphrase sherlock, "this is a two-cuppa problem"!

Rob i see what you mean about discharge in 1915 BUT on list of Promotions it shows Sergt on 13.1.1916 which is what he was when he died??

This is probably a red herring. But it's worth keeping it in mind in case of confussion.....
On Ancestry, there is a WW1 pension record for a Charles Thompson, in the Northumberland Fus. with reg.number 13559. Interestingly, this man gives his NoK as his father John (which often becomes Jack).
However, this man seems to be discharged in 1915 (although thanks to Ancestry's wonderful indexing, the promised 18 pages seem only to show 3 before a different person starts).
As I said, this is probably just a red herring, but it may help.
