Janice Yes, the decision re the 1911 census has already been made....it will go partially on-line in 2009, as part of a test programme for the eventual full release - good idea, iron out problems BEFORE it goes fully on line. The 1931 England and Wales census was destroyed by fire during WW2. No census was taken in 1941. Which only leaves the 1921 census. Even IF the government agreed to 'release' it tomorrow which is extremely unlikely - how do people think they are going to access it? It takes about 5 years to transcribe the records - or do people expect to be allowed into the Warehouse to rummage about for themselves? OC |

its freedom of choice if anyone wants to sign the petition, but one thread nudged daily is enough...I can't understand anyone putting a petition thread on the boards when they can see there are plenty posted. Its like some kind of experiment with subliminal messages. .1931.....petition...1941....petition...sign....1911.....sign...petition 1941...petition ...sign.... moe |

Add me too. Took me long enough to find my lot with all the transcription mistakes on the other census'......would much rather they took their time and weren't rushed! |

Can I vote twice? I did think I might start a thread offering lookups from 1911 & 1921, just to see whether I got any takers, but then I remembered that my membership here is up today, so it's probably goodbye from me, instead. |

Count me in. I think a lot of people have no idea of the amount of work needed to transcribe a census. Probably the same people who have never been to a record office. |

Just to say I have seen today that the decision Has already been made? I was looking on Official Records at Kew and what they covered and came across the decision to release the 1911 census which will get to us in 2012? It said it Would NOT be Released until then. It did say that people could apply for information on the 1911 census, but of course it would depend on what you want to know, how much detail you give? Addresses etc. Plus the charges would be higher than Normal, whatever that means, For any searches done. Janice x |

i e mailed the gov office dealing with the cencus, the reply was the gov will not release the full cencus before 2012.. this is the reply, The 1911 Census must remain closed as a whole document until 2012, to protect personally sensitive information. However the Information Commissioner's decision means that The National Archives must supply some information from the 1911 Census in response to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests. Go to The Information Commissioner's website to read the decision notice |

I think what people are failing to see is that the government are not going to go back on their previous decision, no ammount of signatures are going to change that unless you get the majority of the entire population to sign not just a few thousand. If they change their mind about this then when does it stop? What other decisions shall they go back on? The present government are also preparing themselves for an election, their efforts are going to be focused elsewhere. Is not having the 1911 census harming you in anyway? We are still able to trace people via BMD certs, trade directories, voters rolls and other ways. I think we should count ourselfs lucky anyway. We could live in a country that detroyed the returns after they had all the statistical information from them. Mhairi |

I think Genes should make sure that the boards are kept to what they should be. This one is for people wanting records to be looked for. NOT for general discussions like this thread is all about. So I will sign a petition that says all threads about any census not yet released be on the general board where it should be. And not cluttering other threads up. |

I still don't see the problem,it's not compulsory to read them, and everybody has a right to an opinion be that right or wrong. That's probably why Americans can view their censi after 70 years , i'm sure quite a few of them would reach the age of 70 and be able to view details of people who are still alive. I agree emails you don't want must be a pain. |

Michael it becomes a joke when there is half a dozen about it, but when you get several emails everyday about it and see at last count 9 threads, on one forum then it becomes ANNOYING. There is no 1931 census ,it was destroyed...the 1911 census has already been kinda brought forward to 2009, and I dont see how it could be transcribed any faster anyway.... As for the 1921 it should be released after 100 years. The people that are included in that census are still with us, its just not right. |

Why, If you don't like or agree don't read or sign them.Everybody has a right to post a thread, as long as it doesn't offend anybody what's the problem. |

I demand the immediate release of the 2011 census - that way I will know if I am still going to be alive in 2011, if not, I can sell up now and go on a luxury world cruise. OC |
