I don't suppose that the name might be Sissie? That name is used as a diminutive of Cecily, but also as sister.

Granny used to talk about Auntie Sissie, but there's no one of that name in my tree, Mum thought she might be Granny's sister in law, whose name was Rachel.

Hi.With regards to entry by ArgllGran re;1891 Census. From what I can gather the Family must have had a split up and Ann Teasdale moved back home with her family to live with her father. I did find a report in the Durham County "Advertiser" of a John Robinson,Miner, drunk on highway at Tow Law,22/08/1884.On 05/09/1884 he was fined 7s 6d which would have been a heavy fine in those days. Maybe the family problem was his drinking. In the 1901 Census the Robinson family were all still with Ann's Father and the whole family are recorded as Teasdales.

Thanks for all your efforts re;the name Thissie. Probably may never
know her correct name.

Terence Report 7 Aug 2024 17:16

Hi.Have finally got back the book belonging to my Paternal G'Parents. It is called My Friends Birthdays which in effect is an autograph book of family and friends. Most of the entries were added in the 1890's.My grandmother was Annie Robinson,1874-1930 and her future husband was my grandfather Thomas Robert Liddle,1868.
The question I asked was regarding the name on the inside cover that reads;
Thissie Robinson,Thornley Road,Near Tow Law, RSO, Durham. I found later that
RSO apparently meant Railway Station that the post was delivered as I think it is a rural area.

Sorry to be so long winded but still don't know what Thissie is a
corruption of.

Check the names in the book.................if it's a record of friends' birthdays, one would imagine the recipient would include the donor.
Also, try to determine when it was printed

Thanks again for everyone's efforts .My son informs me it might be Late June/July before the book will be finished. Will wait and see what the actual wording is and her address.
Thanks again,Terry L.

Nothing to do with Terence's query - but -

Robinson Bell was the son of Alice's brother Matthew and his wife Louisa Jane Briddick (or Jane Louisa in other records):

BELL, ROBINSON mmn BRIDDICK

Marriages Sep 1890 (>99%)
Bell Matthew Weardale 10a 414

Jane/Louisa died in early 1891, possibly in childbirth.

Although Phillis still seems a possibility to me, it feels odd that the surname is included.

I hope Terence will let us know the exact wording when he gets the book back.

Assuming Thissie herself wrote the words, it would seem more natural to write just "From Thissie" or "From Aunt Thissie" or something like that, unless it was to distinguish her from some other Thissie - which seems unlikely.
But I'm probably over-thinking it!

Another possibility might be Annie's aunt Alice (nee Bell) who married John's brother Joseph in early 1881 or late 1880.
Alice and Joseph were living in Tow Law in both 1881 and 1891.
Alice is a name which might be corrupted to Thissie by a young child.
If she gave the gift soon after her marriage, she might have added her new surname.

I was thinking along the same lines as AG, the gifting relative could also have used the name the family called her.

I didn’t know my Aunt was never known by her own name until she died.

Terence - I hope you are fully recovered.

ArgyllGran

It might be useful to know the exact wording on the book.

The book was obviously given to Annie before her marriage in 1894, and possibly when she was quite young.
It's the sort of thing I can imagine as a gift to an 8 or 9-year-old, or young teenager, who might still be calling a relative by the name she used when too young to pronounce the real name.

Although we'll never know for sure, I'm inclined to agree with Terence's suggestion that Thissie was her aunt Phillis, whose middle name was Annie.

The surname is very common, so the donor of the book may not have been related to the recipient.

When was the book printed?

If it's a record of birthdays, isn't the donor included?

You haven't answered the questions about whether you've looked at any records to try to work out what the name might be..........................

Also, was Robinson the maiden name of your grandmother............or her married name? Your post is unclear.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 28 May 2024 15:39
